Speech-Language Pathologist (full-time)

Maternity Coverage: September 2026 - March 2027

Are you interested in providing integrated speech-language therapy services for special needs students? If so, Gillen Brewer wants to meet you! The Gillen Brewer School is a private, special education school on the Upper East Side, serving students ages 5-14 in our lower and middle school programs. We are currently looking to hire a Speech-Language Pathologist who desires to be a part of an integrated educational/therapeutic team to cover maternity leave. A minimum of 2 years of experience is required. All applicants will be required to submit a resume, cover letter, and two reference letters. This position starts September 2026.

Program: Lower School / Middle School

Supervisor: Head of Speech-Language Pathology Department

Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

School Calendar: 12-month Academic

FLSA Status: Exempt

Compensation: $84,000 - $93,000 (Can be adjusted depending on your years of experience)

Starting: 09/2026

Summary

The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is a critical part of the child’s learning experience at the Gillen Brewer School. The SLP will work as part of an integrated team with Teachers, Occupational Therapists, and Psychologists in a therapeutic school setting. As expected in a pediatric special needs population, responsibilities include the ability to evaluate and treat students with a wide variety of speech-language disorders, formulate individualized treatment programs, keep appropriate records, and inform/collaborate with the therapeutic team and parents regarding the students’ progress. Gillen Brewer expects SLPs to conduct themselves in a professional manner with regard to attire, attitude, participation, communication, and interactions with staff, children, and parents. SLPs are expected to understand the school’s policies, procedures, and guidelines as set in the staff handbook, located on the school’s shared Google Drive. As part of the school community, SLPs are expected to create a positive working environment for children, families, and colleagues. SLPs will also support and promote the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) practices within the program and throughout the community. The SLP reports to the Head of the Department who reports to the Assistant Head of School. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct informal/formal assessment of students
Write session notes and reports
Conduct engaging therapy sessions, demonstrating an understanding of the student’s individual needs
Provide sessions across settings based on the individual needs of the students (e.g., pull-out, push-in to provide classroom support)
Collaboratively support the students’ speech-language, physical, emotional, sensory, and academic needs
Follow through with behavioral interventions and supports
Participate in team meetings
Recommend and implement therapeutic strategies/programs into the classroom and assist/train the therapeutic team in how to use them
Through the lens of an SLP support teachers with use of visuals, classroom arrangement, and upkeep
Collaborate with teachers/therapists to plan and co-lead group activities in the classroom when within your domain
Purposefully co-treat with other therapists
Coordinate and communicate with outside therapists/service providers as needed
Maintain parent/caregiver communication, providing ongoing updates on progress as well as sharing strategies and activities for implementation at home. Communication should facilitate the family’s understanding of their child’s needs/diagnosis and address any questions or concerns regarding the child’s overall speech-language development
Maintain office and departmental upkeep (e.g., organize files, update assessment tools)
Follow appropriate procedures for handling issues with other staff members
Keep current on professional trends and literature as well as attend continuing education courses on an as-needed basis to advance professional skills
Maintain an open and honest line of communication with the Head of the SLP Department and the Assistant Head of School. Take an active role in supervision, learning, and training. Actively seek out information and resources appropriate to the school
Provide classroom staffing support as needed
Provide staff and parent in-services as needed

Required Skills/Abilities

Hearing ability sufficient to evaluate student's speech
Communicating verbally and in writing with students, faculty members, and parents so that all parties understand the program and the degree of progress being made
Thorough understanding of therapy procedures and case management
Ability to establish and maintain rapport with children and reinforce therapy sessions
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to collaborate with the team members and colleagues
Team-oriented approach with a positive work attitude

Planning and Recordkeeping

Take anecdotal notes in regard to each student’s progress and/or behavioral data as needed
Informal/Formal assessment of children: collect evidence of outcome based assessment in all content areas and keep in a systematic way
Write Mid-Year Reports collaboratively with the team

Professional Requirements

Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology (required)
NY State license as a Speech-Language Pathologist
Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) certification Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped (TSHH) certification
Two years of experience working in the Speech-Language Pathology field (required)

Physical Requirements

Employees must have the physical capacity to navigate the classroom and school environments in order to effectively meet the needs of our students. Such physical requirements include but are not limited to: walking, standing, sitting, climbing up and down stairs, kneeling, stooping, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Employees must be able to sit at a desk and work on a computer for long periods of time to complete necessary paperwork. Vision, with or without lenses, must be sufficient to read in both paper and digital formats. Employees must have the ability to hear, read, write, and speak in English.

Professional Development

The school is a community of learners. In addition to staff development and training at Gillen Brewer, employees are encouraged to pursue educational goals through conferences and various workshops. SLPs are required to attend all staff development workshops, staff, team, and supervision meetings. Staff is also encouraged to attend all school functions listed on the school calendar.

Supervision & Support

The Head of the SLP Department will oversee and analyze all aspects of the department through the use of sessions, observation cycles, team meetings, conversations with staff, curriculum development, student progress, and report writing. Staff development and support through modeling and coaching will be provided which will include in-house and outside professional opportunities. Frequency of observations and feedback sessions will be determined by the Department Head and Assistant Head of School. The Head of the SLP Department will conduct evaluations using this job description and the SLP Evaluation checklist as a guide. Evidence of effectiveness will be collected through observations, discussions, and collaboration.
