Event Staff

Location: New Kent, VA | Colonial Downs

Pay: $17 per hour

Schedule: Seasonal | Thursday – Monday | June - September

Position Summary

As Event Staff, you will provide security services throughout Colonial Downs, helping to ensure the safety of guests, employees, property, and assets. This role combines security responsibilities with customer service and requires individuals who are alert, professional, and able to respond effectively to changing situations.

Who Will Be Successful in This Role?

The ideal candidate enjoys working with the public, maintaining a visible security presence, and helping create a safe environment in a busy entertainment venue. Success in this role requires professionalism, attentiveness, good judgment, and excellent customer service skills.

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

Please apply only if you meet the following requirements:

High School Diploma or GED
Current Virginia State Guard License (Required)
Minimum 1 year of security experience
Strong customer service and communication skills
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays during the racing season
Ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods
Ability to write clear and accurate reports

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in a security, public safety, military, or law enforcement environment
Experience working in entertainment, hospitality, sports, or event venues
Experience working with CCTV, access control, or security monitoring systems

Key Responsibilities

Security Operations

Monitor assigned areas to ensure the safety and security of guests, employees, and property
Patrol buildings, grounds, parking areas, and assigned locations
Control access points and monitor pedestrian and vehicle traffic
Escort personnel, vendors, or materials as needed

Monitoring & Incident Response

Identify and report suspicious activity, safety concerns, incidents, and policy violations
Respond appropriately to alarms, emergencies, accidents, and security incidents
Monitor CCTV systems and other security equipment as assigned
Assist with investigations and provide detailed incident documentation

Safety & Compliance

Maintain knowledge of emergency procedures and site-specific post orders
Inspect assigned areas for safety hazards and security risks
Support loss prevention and risk reduction efforts
Follow all company, client, and regulatory requirements

Customer Service

Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times
Greet and assist guests, employees, and visitors courteously
Provide directions, information, and assistance as needed
Help create a safe and welcoming experience for all visitors

Reporting & Communication

Complete daily activity reports, incident reports, and log entries accurately
Communicate security concerns and operational issues to supervisors
Stay informed on changes to procedures, post orders, and site policies
