The Bay County Personnel Department is accepting applications for positions with the BAY COUNTY 9-1-1

CENTRAL DISPATCH CENTER.

JOB TITLE: DISPATCHER – 911 Emergency Telecommunicator

RATE OF PAY: $20.98 per hour entry, progressing to $25.59 per hour after 3 years (CD01)

GENERAL SUMMARY: Dispatchers must work under the general supervision of the Director of Bay County 9-1-1 Central Dispatch and directly for the Supervisor assigned to each shift. The dispatcher operates a radio console, multi-line telephone system, LEIN, computer terminal and other equipment. Accuracy, Brevity and Clarity are essential elements of the job. Candidates must be able to function in a high stress, team-oriented environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Operate a multi-line telephone console system.

Determine and assign the level of priority of the call and enter the data into a computer-aided dispatch system for radio dispatch purposes.

Perform emergency medical dispatch. Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for emergency medical calls.

Monitor and operate a radio console.

Receive and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints.

Ask questions to interpret, analyze and anticipate the caller’s situation as to resolve problems, provide information, dispatch emergency services, or refer callers to other agencies.

Dispatch and coordinate the responses of public safety agencies (Fire, Law Enforcement and Emergency Medical Services).

Identify appropriate number and type of equipment or apparatus to dispatch.

Enters and modifies information into local, state and national computer databases.

Monitor and respond to a variety of technical systems and alarms.

Punctual and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

Multitasking: Must possess the ability to listen and understand radio traffic and phone calls simultaneously.

Flexible Schedule: Must possess the ability to work nights, holidays, weekends, and frequent overtime.

Relationships: Must possess the ability to develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with fellow employees, representatives from other agencies, and supervisors.

Decision Making: Must possess ability to use sound judgment and decision-making skills to evaluate situations, establish priorities, and resolve matters.

Affective Communicator: Must possess the ability actively listen and communicate effectively through clear speech and hearing.

Accuracy: Must possess the ability to write clearly and spell correctly.

Typing: Must possess the ability to type 30 WPM corrected.

Testing: Must pass County provided drug and hearing test. May be required to take written and/or other examinations. Hearing acuity is required, with or without accommodating devices.

Successful candidates must achieve State of Michigan designated telecommunications status within 18 months of hire date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Candidate has successfully completed the Module 1 basic 40-hour telecommunications training course, as identified by the Michigan State 9-1-1 Committee. Candidate is currently certified in Priority Dispatch Emergency Medical Dispatch.

Telecommunications: Must have knowledge of telecommunications systems, including transmission, broadcasting, and computerized databases. Further, must understand basic dispatch codes, as well as standard abbreviations and industry terminology commonly used by emergency medical services, Fire Departments, and law enforcement agencies.

Geography: Must understand jurisdictional boundaries, as well as streets, landmarks, public buildings, and waterways within Bay County.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position involves sitting, being mobile, bending and/or standing for significant periods of time. Additional requirements include the ability to move objects according to the following weight & frequency: generally, 20 pounds of force up to one third of the time.
