Full Job Description

The Surgical Assistant/First Assistant is responsible for assisting the surgeon under direct and indirect supervision throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative duties and procedures as needed. The surgical assistant/first assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.

The preoperative phase includes, but is not limited to safe positioning, assist circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the patient.

The intraoperative phase includes, but not limited to performing specific tasks according to individual surgeon preference utilizing appropriate techniques.

The postoperative phase includes, but not limited to, application of specific dressing material, assist in transfer of patient and following patient to recovery if needed or directed by surgeon.

What you'll need:

Certification from surgical assisting programs accredited through ARC/STSA, ABSA, NSAA.
2 years of surgical assistant/first assistant experience is required.
Some areas may require specialized experience. (i.e. in cardiothoracic surgery, two years of directly related experience is required).

What you'll do:

Assist surgeons during operative procedures by providing skilled tissue handling, exposure, retraction, suctioning, irrigation, hemostasis, and wound closure support while maintaining a clear surgical field and optimizing patient outcomes.
Perform intraoperative technical duties including placement and management of retractors, manipulation of sutures and tissue, application of hemostatic agents, vessel ligation, and implementation of temporary and permanent hemostasis techniques as directed by the surgeon.
Support surgical wound closure through appropriate use of subcutaneous, subcuticular, and skin closure techniques, administration of local anesthetics as directed, and selection and application of appropriate postoperative dressings.
Ensure safe patient positioning throughout surgical procedures by utilizing specialized positioning equipment, protecting pressure points, maintaining circulation, preventing nerve injury, and continuously monitoring for positioning-related complications.
Collaborate closely with surgeons and the perioperative team to maintain a safe, efficient surgical environment, carrying out procedural directives while prioritizing patient safety, comfort, and adherence to established surgical standards and protocols
