Director of Clinical Training

Location: Portland, OR
Supervisor: Chief Operating Officer
Employee Classification: Exempt (Salaried), Full-Time
Hours: Full-Time, 40 hours per week
Compensation: range of $115,000 to $135,000 annually DOE

Onboarding Timeline: Approximately 2-3 months

Primary Function:

The Director of Clinical Training role is responsible for overseeing and supporting the Clinical Training department, its trainees, and associated supervisors, including clinical consultation and direction when needed, supporting compliance, clinical best practices, and generally being a go-to-resource for practitioners on site. They are responsible for setting and meeting performance goals, financial goals, and other measures of success for the Clinical Training department, and for collaborating with other department directors toward the overall success of Portland Mental Health & Wellness. They will maintain at least 130 clinical contact hours quarterly in the role of Therapist (see more details below) in combination with the administrative role of Director to maintain full-time employment status.

As healers, therapists offer a range of services that support the mental and emotional well-being of individuals, families, and communities. They promote and facilitate the attainment of optimal mental health through prevention, treatment, and maintenance services.

Therapists work collaboratively with patients, their families, and other healthcare providers, recognizing that all voices are important and deserve to be heard. They provide culturally sensitive and responsive care, acknowledging the impact of historical trauma and colonization on the mental health of communities and individuals.

In their work, therapists may offer therapy services, both individual and group, that center the experiences and knowledge of patients. They prioritize the empowerment and agency of patients, recognizing their unique identities and strengths, and support them in developing and using their own coping skills and strategies.

Therapists also offer ongoing maintenance services that support the sustainability of mental and emotional well-being. They recognize the importance of long-term care and work with patients to identify and address any obstacles to maintaining their mental health.

Overall, therapists approach their work with humility, respect, and a commitment to decolonizing and liberating mental health care. They prioritize the well-being and self-determination of patients, their families, and their communities, recognizing their intrinsic value and inherent dignity.

Essential Functions:

Demonstrate an understanding of sound ethical practice in conjunction with the established and defined ethics of one’s training and discipline.
Serve as the liaison between the doctoral internship program and doctoral interns’ graduate programs and are responsible for maintaining communication regarding doctoral interns’ progress and any difficulties.
Act as point of contact for trainees and supervisors for Training Department related questions
Participate in routine meetings: 1-hour monthly management team meetings, 1.5-hour bi-weekly management team meetings focused on DEAI, 30-minute weekly meetings with the CEO and COO, and 1-hour bi-weekly meetings with Licensed Supervisors
Conduct weekly one-on-one check-ins with trainees
Conduct weekly group supervision for doctoral externs.
Creation, review, and management of Clinical Training department SOPs
Coordinate annual didactic schedule, presenters, and room reservation (physical or Zoom)
Coordinate annual hiring procedures (internship and postdoc) to include but is not limited to: job postings, establishing hiring committees, creating applicant rating systems, interview day agendas, Zoom coordination for interview days, extending employment offers
Coordinate annual supervisors selection and assignment to trainees
Coordinate with PCCs about annual caseload ramp up schedule
Coordinate with administrative staff regarding room assignments, work schedules, credentialing and other legal or insurance requirements prior to trainees start date
Coordinate with Human Resources regarding onboarding and orientation processes
Coordinate End-of-Term evaluations for trainees and supervisors
Coordinate with individual supervisors regarding any Developmental Action Plan (DAP) activities
Liaison with the Oregon Board of Psychology
Facilitate exit interviews for trainees
Ongoing review, analysis, and improvement for the overall health, success, and sustainability of the Clinical Training department
Manage financial activities for the department, including budget planning, monitoring, and reporting, to ensure alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
Perform other duties as assigned

Pre-Doctoral Internship Formation Specific Responsibilities:

Continuation of doctoral-level internship program with the goal of maintaining APPIC accreditation, as well as future APA accreditation
Facilitation and delegation of tasks to the Internship Committee
Co-facilitation and delegation of tasks to the Training Coordinator
Manage application process to APPIC membership
Maintain good standing with APPIC Accredited Site, and as an APA Accredited Internship Site
Manage Match process with APPIC Internship annually
Create a self-study committee and continue the application process to APA
Communicate with the doctoral interns’ home programs as needed

Clinical Encounter Expectations: This role is required to complete 130 qualifying encounters in a 13 week calendar quarter, which is equivalent to a minimum of about 10 encounters per week. They can always choose to complete more, but the minimum expectation is at least 10 completed encounters per week. While initially building their caseload, a practitioner is expected to undertake 2 new patient intakes per workday, or up to 8 intakes per workweek.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required: a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited university
Required: appropriate board approved licensing, current and unrestricted
Demonstrate competence and humility in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, class, ability et al
Demonstrate commitment to the preservation of a workplace which embraces diversity
Demonstrate commitment to confidentiality of patient and employee information
Communicate professionally and effectively with patients and clinicians
Demonstrate a strong attention to detail and organization
Demonstrate patience: being patient with people who may have trouble communicating or understanding what is happening is imperative for this position
Follow policies and procedures to contribute to the administrative efficiency of the practice, taking initiative to suggest and develop those that may be needed
Ability to work with Mac OS & Google Workspace
