Full Job Description

Job Summary

Gambit Robotics is seeking a hands-on Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineer to support rapid prototyping and development of a new robotic hardware system.

This is a part-time, contract role based in New York City and requires regular in-person work with our engineering team and prototype hardware.

The ideal candidate can move quickly from concept to CAD to a functional prototype. You should be comfortable designing mechanisms, building physical systems, testing them directly, and iterating based on real-world performance.

Responsibilities

Design and prototype mechanical and electromechanical components for robotic systems
Develop mechanisms, fixtures, mounts, brackets, and custom assemblies
Create 3D CAD models, mechanical drawings, and assembly documentation
Select appropriate materials, actuators, motors, sensors, and off-the-shelf components
Build prototypes using 3D printing, machining, and other fabrication methods
Assemble, test, and debug hardware
Evaluate force, torque, stiffness, tolerances, repeatability, and durability
Identify mechanical failures and implement design improvements
Collaborate closely with electrical, robotics, and software engineers
Maintain bills of materials and clear design documentation

Requirements

Degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, product design, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Creo, or similar CAD software
Experience designing mechanisms, fixtures, linkages, or actuated assemblies
Hands-on experience with 3D printing, CNC machining, fabrication, and mechanical assembly
Strong understanding of force, torque, friction, tolerances, material selection, and mechanical design
Ability to move quickly from rough concept to functional prototype
Comfortable building, testing, and debugging hardware directly
Strong practical judgment and a preference for simple, reliable solutions
Based in New York City or able to commute regularly

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with robotics, automation, consumer hardware, medical devices, appliances, or related systems
Experience with motors, servos, sensors, or compliant mechanisms
Experience in a startup or rapid prototyping environment
Personal robotics, maker, or competitive engineering projects
