About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated, thoughtful, and strategic College Counselor with a strong STEM background to join our fully remote team.

In this role, you will work closely with high school students to help them explore their interests, develop meaningful goals, and build compelling college applicant profiles. You will serve not only as a strategic advisor but also as a trusted mentor who helps students develop confidence, curiosity, independence, and a stronger sense of purpose.

The ideal candidate has a genuine passion for youth development, a deep understanding of STEM pathways, and a creative, student-centered approach to mentorship.

Key Responsibilities

Student Mentorship and Development

Build trusting, supportive relationships with students and help them strengthen their self-awareness, confidence, motivation, and ownership of their goals.

Major and Career Exploration

Guide students in identifying and exploring potential college majors and career pathways, particularly within STEM fields, based on their interests, strengths, experiences, and aspirations.

Passion Project Development

Brainstorm, design, and mentor students through meaningful and distinctive projects that demonstrate curiosity, initiative, creativity, technical ability, or community impact.

Extracurricular Strategy

Advise students on selecting and pursuing purposeful extracurricular activities, internships, competitions, research opportunities, summer programs, and community-based experiences.

Academic Planning

Provide strategic course-selection guidance to help students build rigorous, balanced, and compelling academic records aligned with their goals.

Goal Setting and Accountability

Hold regular virtual meetings, establish clear and achievable milestones, monitor progress, and help students remain motivated and accountable.

Family Communication

Communicate thoughtfully and professionally with students and families, providing clear updates, setting realistic expectations, and cultivating long-term trust.

Team Collaboration

Collaborate closely with colleagues, share insights and resources, and contribute ideas that strengthen the quality and consistency of SEED’s services.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree or higher in a STEM discipline, including science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or a closely related field.

Experience

Prior experience in college counseling, academic advising, teaching, coaching, youth programming, or direct student mentorship.

Commitment to Youth Development

A demonstrated passion for working with adolescents and helping young people develop confidence, independence, curiosity, and a sense of purpose.

Communication Skills

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students and families in a virtual environment.

Strategic and Creative Thinking

Ability to identify meaningful opportunities, develop individualized student strategies, and translate broad goals into practical action plans.

Organization and Reliability

Strong attention to detail, excellent follow-through, and the ability to manage multiple students, deadlines, and priorities effectively.

Work Style

Self-motivated, proactive, collaborative, and comfortable working independently within a flat, fully remote organization.
