International Rep, UAW Community Action Program (CAP) Department, Detroit MI & Washington, DC

The UAW is seeking experienced candidates who share our ambition for big, bold campaigns to apply for the position of International Representative for National and Michigan Community Action Program (CAP). CAP is the UAW’s Political Department. Candidates should be enthusiastic campaigners, organizers, and/or trainers looking to build ambitious programs and meet goals needed to win on our core issues and develop members’ leadership across CAP.
Key Responsibilities
- Support execution of grassroots, member-led advocacy and lobbying campaigns. Experience with local, state or federal-level issue campaigns. Work closely across relevant Departments (Legislative Department, Communications Department, Organizing and Bargaining Strategies) to design and implement advocacy strategies: lobby visits, calls and texts, contract campaign support, email and letter-writing tools, etc.
- Support execution of V-CAP campaigns to strengthen and support local union capacity to increase V-CAP participation across our union. Ability to think like an organizer and be creative.
- Support efforts to hold elected officials accountable: including strengthening endorsement processes, tracking voting records, incorporating key issues into our electoral work, and garnering political support for contract campaigns in Michigan and Nationally.
- Support execution of member-to-member field programs. Experience with labor union issue advocacy campaigns that conduct member-to-member communications and direct outreach at the workplace, including setting up phone and text banks, running volunteer calls, tracking and adjusting data to meet needs of the campaign.
- Support issue campaigns to meet the UAW’s core issue priorities. Assist with design of issue campaigns, lead volunteer calls with leaders, mobilization efforts, and distributed organizing tactics.
- Support staff and members with organizational and technical assistance to grow strong CAP Councils and Local CAP Committees.
- Assist regional and in-state staff to support campaign program goals. Assist staff to help meet their campaign and field goals, including member-to-member and public voter contact programs. Become an expert in field, training, and campaign support for all staff who need it. Work quickly to identify a solution and/or next step.
- Experience using modern advocacy and voter/member contact tools such as: NGP VAN/LAN or other voter contact database programs, and member organization and contact tools such as Action Network, Spoke, ThruTalk, etc. is strongly preferred.
- Assist in the work of major conferences, conventions, and events requiring the Dept’s role.
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with community organizations, political organizations, and other labor unions in support of our long-term power building work.
- Communicate effectively by phone and email with all Regions/Departments.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills
- Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize to meet deadlines.
- Must align with UAW principles and policies, maintaining a high level of integrity and ethical transparency.
- At least three to four years of union, electoral campaign, or issue campaign experience.
- Ability to problem solve, identify challenges, and develop solutions independently.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
- Flexible and open to change.
- Comfortable and can learn multiple internal systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present detailed information effectively.
- Proficient with data analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
- Be able to effectively liaise with departmental staff, Regions, and local union leaders.
- Ability to work independently and manage time and priorities is a necessity.
- Flexibility to work long hours, including nights and weekends.

Salary and Benefits
These are full time positions, in person position based in Detroit, MI and Washington DC. Possibility of hybrid or other location for the right candidate. The UAW offers a starting salary of $118,566.76 for this position, including health, retirement, and other benefits. Relocation may be available.
