Controls Systems Programmer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Controls Systems Programmer to support the design, development, and commissioning of building automation and controls systems. This role involves programming, system integration, troubleshooting, and collaborating with project teams to deliver successful automation solutions. The position is primarily office and field based, with travel to project sites as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop programming solutions for building automation and control systems
- Interpret project documentation and translate system requirements into functional software
- Work alongside project management to organise programming activities and meet project schedules
- Create operator interfaces and graphical displays for end users
- Configure and integrate third-party equipment using industry-standard communication protocols, including BACnet and Modbus
- Diagnose and resolve controls, networking, and integration issues during installation and commissioning
- Provide technical support to field personnel throughout project delivery
- Guide and mentor less experienced programmers and provide technical leadership when required
- Maintain programming standards and contribute to continuous improvements in processes and documentation
- Promote safe working practices and support quality-focused project execution
- Collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and other stakeholders to achieve project objectives
Qualifications
- Degree in engineering, computer science, electronics, or another relevant technical discipline is preferred. Equivalent industry experience will also be considered
- At least five years of experience programming or commissioning building automation or control systems
- Previous experience supporting construction or commissioning teams is advantageous
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems, building controls hardware, and control panel operation
- Experience with BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, Modbus RTU, and Modbus TCP/IP communications
- Understanding of electrical control circuits, relay operation, and control logic
- Basic knowledge of IP networking concepts, including routers, DHCP, DNS, and subnetting
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities with the confidence to solve technical problems independently
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment
- Demonstrated leadership, professionalism, and commitment to delivering high-quality work
Compensation
- Competitive hourly pay between £55 - £70
