R&D tax credits, done right. Join a boutique firm punching above its weight.

Strata R&D Tax Group is hiring a Senior Tax Strategy Advisor. Fully remote. CPA required. $130K–$150K DOE plus performance bonus.

We're a boutique tax strategy firm with a focus on R&D tax credits. The firm sits between the extremes. Overly conservative CPAs leave real credits on the table. Aggressive R&D shops push too hard and trigger audits. We do neither. We identify the strongest defensible credit and build the documentation to support it, the way the IRS expects to see it, so every number we put forward is a number we can stand behind.

We're growing fast, and we need a senior technical mind to help us do it. Someone who can run technical research, build financial models, work directly with clients and advisors, and help us evaluate new services beyond R&D. If you're a CPA who wants to work across the most interesting corners of specialty tax; R&D credits, charitable strategy for high-net-worth individuals, and renewable energy tax credit transactions; this is the seat.

What you’ll do

Support R&D tax credit studies end to end, from qualification through defense, including QRE quantification, business-component documentation, and audit-ready substantiation.
Conduct in-depth tax research on federal and state regulations. Translate your analysis into clear, defensible positions.
Build financial models that quantify the cash tax impact of proposed strategies for clients.
Work directly with clients and their advisors to build comfort, credibility, and trust in our work.
Assist advisors with tax return preparation and review, ensuring our strategies are properly elected and reported.
Support renewable energy tax credit buyers through diligence and transaction execution.
Help our sales team and our product-representation-firm partners win new engagements.
Evaluate new tax strategies and service opportunities as we expand beyond R&D.
Use AI and new technology as leverage; grow what our small team can deliver without simply adding headcount.
Operate like an intrapreneur. Take ownership of outcomes, pursue growth, and see your role as a steward of value for clients, partners, colleagues, and the firm.

Who you are

Active CPA license. Non-negotiable.
5–8 years in tax, public accounting, or specialty tax services.
Hands-on R&D tax credit experience strongly preferred. Exposure to charitable planning for HNW individuals or renewable energy credits is a plus.
Strong federal and state tax research skills: IRC, Treasury Regulations, judicial and administrative authority.
You can build a financial model from scratch and defend every assumption in it.
Excellent written and verbal communication. You can explain sophisticated tax strategy in plain language to clients and advisors.
You use AI and new technology as leverage, not as a threat.
Self-directed, proactive, detail-oriented. You follow up. You finish things.
Bachelor’s in accounting, finance, or a related field. Master’s in tax or accounting preferred.

What we offer

Base salary of $130,000–$150,000, depending on experience.
Annual performance bonus, tied to benchmarks you and your manager set together.
Commission and incentive-compensation upside tied to specific goals.

Three weeks (15 days) of PTO plus 11 paid holidays.
Fully remote. Flexible hours (8 am – 5 pm MST is the default schedule; work when you work best, as long as you communicate with your manager and attend mandatory team meetings).
Minimal travel. Occasional in-person team gatherings in Salt Lake City.

Reports to: VP of Professional Services.
Start date: ASAP.
