Position Summary
The Middle School Skateboarding Instructor plans and leads safe, engaging skateboarding classes for students at the beginner through intermediate level. This position teaches fundamental skateboarding skills, balance, movement, flat ground tricks, skate park etiquette, injury prevention, perseverance, confidence, and sportsmanship. The instructor is responsible for creating a positive and inclusive learning environment, actively supervising students, maintaining equipment, and helping students safely progress at their individual skill levels.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Skateboarding Instruction and Student Engagement
- Plan and facilitate structured, age-appropriate skateboarding lessons and activities.
- Teach beginner through intermediate skateboarding skills, including balance, stance, pushing, stopping, turning, falling safely, and flat ground tricks.
- Explain and demonstrate proper body positioning, foot placement, movement, and skateboarding techniques.
- Adapt lessons to accommodate students with different skill levels, abilities, and comfort levels.
- Encourage students who may feel nervous or hesitant while maintaining safe participation expectations.
- Promote perseverance, confidence, teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, and respect.
- Observe and evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Organize demonstrations, competitions, tournaments, showcases, or special skateboarding events when appropriate.
- Recruit and encourage students to participate consistently in the skateboarding program.
Safety, Supervision and Equipment
- Maintain active supervision of students during all skateboarding activities.
- Ensure students properly wear helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and other required protective equipment.
- Inspect skateboards, helmets, pads, ramps, and other equipment before use.
- Identify and report damaged or unsafe equipment immediately.
- Organize, inventory, distribute, collect, and properly store skateboards and protective equipment.
- Establish and reinforce skate park rules, boundaries, safe riding areas, and appropriate conduct.
- Respond appropriately when a student falls or is injured.
- Administer basic first aid within the scope of current certification and contact appropriate staff when additional assistance is needed.
- Complete incident reports accurately and promptly when necessary.
- Follow all L.A.C.E.R., LAUSD, and Beyond the Bell safety policies, emergency procedures, and reporting requirements.
Program Operations
- Maintain accurate daily attendance and arrive on time prepared to lead activities.
- Use appropriate classroom-management strategies and maintain professional boundaries with students, families, school personnel, and staff.
- Communicate with the Program Director regarding student progress, behavior, attendance, equipment needs, and safety concerns.
- Attend required staff meetings, trainings, events, and program activities.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe instructional space.
- Follow L.A.C.E.R. policies, wear the required staff uniform, and perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
- Substantial skateboarding experience and knowledge of skateboarding techniques required.
- Ability to safely teach students at the beginner through intermediate level.
- Experience providing skateboarding instruction preferred.
- One to two years of experience working with youth in a school, nonprofit, recreation, sports, or after-school setting preferred.
- Experience working with middle school-aged students, particularly youth ages 10–14, preferred.
- Strong knowledge of skateboarding safety, protective equipment, injury prevention, and skate park etiquette.
- Ability to demonstrate skateboarding skills clearly and safely.
- Strong classroom management and active-supervision skills.
- Ability to lead and supervise groups of students in an active outdoor environment.
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate students while maintaining clear expectations and appropriate boundaries.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a program team.
- Flexible, dependable, proactive, and open to feedback.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree preferred, or current enrollment in a college or university.
- Coursework in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Recreation, Coaching, Education, Youth Development, or a related field preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively participate in and demonstrate skateboarding activities.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, kneel, reach, push, pull, balance, and demonstrate athletic movements.
- Ability to lift and carry skateboards, protective equipment, and other program materials weighing up to 15 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors and in active recreational environments.
- Ability to communicate and exchange information clearly in person and by phone.

Candidates must successfully complete the following prior to employment:
- Current Tuberculosis (TB) clearance.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Live Scan background clearance through state and federal fingerprinting.
