Full Job Description

Christian nonprofit retreat ministry Meadowkirk at Delta Farm (www.meadowkirk.org) is seeking an experienced, hands-on Chef to help supervise and participate in our full-service kitchen operation.

Located in historic Northern Virginia, Meadowkirk is 358 acres of pastoral and wooded nature serving as a place of respite, recreation and renewal for the many church groups, nonprofits, educational organizations and others we serve. Among this key kitchen team member’s responsibilities will be the ability to help ensure a consistently premier retreat dining experience that spans family-style, buffet, grab-and-go and special event formats, and that incorporates our evolving farm-to-table components.

This position can involve full- and part-time commitments. On-site staff housing is a significant possibility, factoring into total compensation value shown in job posting.

The ideal candidate will be available to participate in a flexible work schedule involving mostly weekend meal service as well as weekday meal preparation and meal service assignments and administrative work. This schedule will be determined in collaboration with other team members and based on Meadowkirk’s variable and seasonal retreat reservations calendar.

Working collaboratively with Meadowkirk’s chefs/kitchen team and retreat hospitality staff the Chef will be focused on:

GUEST GROUP MEAL SERVICE

· Prepare and serve a full array of defined, seasonal meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, including occasional reception and snack service offerings.

· Serve as a primary, lead cook (typically at least two meals per day during a three-meal cycle) – having the expertise and flexibility to lead meal preparation and service autonomously (with no/minimal supervision), and in other instances to work in a collaborative, supporting role under the direction of another senior kitchen team lead.

· Assist with set up, clean up, dish washing and removing garbage from kitchen areas.

· Meet and exceed procedures required by the health department and Meadowkirk’s food services operation, maintaining the highest kitchen quality, safety and cleanliness standards and food handling protocols – to include consistently high standards for personal hygiene and cleanliness.

· Have a strong sense of taste and smell (as a key, day-to-day part of ensuring proper meal quality and flavor), knowledge of the Virginia regional cuisine that helps to shape our meal service, excellent hand and finger dexterity (including superior knife skills), and a clear understanding of weights and measures.

KITCHEN OPERATIONAL SUPPORT

· Help refine and develop a set of evolving seasonal menus (not a la carte), pricing, and sourcing – including the incorporation of Meadowkirk’s evolving farm-to-table elements and partnerships with regional farms/other food service-related organizations – to exceed guest group expectations and enable a cost-efficient kitchen operation.

· Support the ministry’s established vision for the Meadowkirk “table” – one that is elevated, simple, healthful, creative and delightful, reflective of our regional setting, and strongly supportive of the retreat experience as a whole.

· Help with the ongoing implementation of Meadowkirk’s kitchen administrative activity, such as team scheduling, team meal preparation instructions, food ordering/procurement, and adjusting recipes and approaches for varying group sizes and requirements.

· Maintain a strong focus on accommodating guest dietary restrictions to help ensure guest safety and a positive retreat experience.

· Help to coordinate/receive food service deliveries, maintaining strong storage and inventory controls.

· Assist in the development and training of new and/or current kitchen team members.

· Assist with occasional kitchen vendor management – including briefing technicians and helping to oversee onsite kitchen equipment/systems maintenance, repair and inspection activity.

The Chef will have:

· At least 2-3 years of relevant experience in a busy restaurant or other food-service setting.

· ServSafe certification in active and good standing.

· Ability and willingness to interact with guests during meal service, as needed, being welcoming and accommodating.

· Strong commitment to engage with all retreat ministry team members in ways that consistently reflect Meadowkirk’s objectives for team cohesiveness, organizational unity, spiritual development, and mutual respect, encouragement and support.

· A heart for Meadowkirk’s mission and distinctive ministry focus on retreat, respite, renewal and Christian rest.

Compensation commensurate with experience and based on factors such as full-/part-time status and potential use of on-site staff housing.

Also required: high school diploma, proof of U.S. citizenship, valid driver’s license, strong verifiable work references and satisfactory background check.
