OFM Salary Range:47 -$53,122 (Step A)- $69,691 (Step L)/yr, depending on years of experience*
Salary is set by WA Office of Financial Management and is not negotiable. Salary listed is inclusive of King County Pay Premium

Step M at $71,392 is attainable for those who have 6 consecutive years working in a WA State institution

At Shoreline Community College, our students have a unique opportunity to combine understanding of science and technology in both our courses and degrees. The Biology department provides educational experiences and opportunities to all students interested in studying the field of biology and preparing for careers in life science and the health occupations. We address all levels of biological organization from cells to ecosystems and prepare students to become the problem solvers of tomorrow.

Under general direction of the Dean of STEM, the Instructional & Classroom Support Technician 3 will perform instructional support of biology courses including microbiology, anatomy & physiology, and general biology for both majors and non-majors. Support for these courses involves the use of scientific, technical and/or academic subject matter knowledge.

Primary responsibilities include the following:

Prepare and set out materials necessary to perform laboratory experiments
Source and prepare animal and plant specimens for lab experiments.
Prepare media.
Cultivate and store bacterial cell lines.
Communicate with faculty regarding lab planning to ensure supplies, equipment, tools, and software needed for classes are properly prepared and available.
Collaborate with faculty to design and update lab protocols and procedures.
Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and coordinating necessary repairs.
Budget and inventory coordination including supply and equipment orders. Maintain computerized inventory of supplies and make recommendations to budget authority.
Evaluate equipment and supplies for needs and “best value” purchases. Secure equipment bids where appropriate. Review and analyze instrumentation from various vendors including in-house testing when appropriate to determine the best instrument for purchase within budget constraints.
Orient new faculty to location of relevant lab materials, proper waste disposal, safety compliance, and proper use of equipment.
Train and provide direction to instructional/student assistants.
Supervise open labs during times when class is not in session.
Manage collection and disposal of hazardous and biohazardous waste generated by the biology labs and stockroom.
Ensure a safe laboratory environment for instructors and students by, among other duties, ensuring PPE, Safety Data Sheets, and safety equipment are stocked and operational.
Maintain “right to know” files, safety orientation sheets, inventory lists, and biohazard/chemical waste management documentation. Work with chemical hygiene officer to maintain a safety plan.
Ensure compliance with college policies and processes regarding student scientific instruction

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree with major study in a basic applied science and two (2) full years of full-time experience as an Instruction & Classroom Support Tech 2 or equivalent

Equivalent education/experience

Knowledge Of:

Microsoft Office applications such as SharePoint, Teams, Excel, Outlook, and Word programs
ctcLink, PeopleSoft, Oracle or other HCM programs
Chemical hygiene/bloodborne pathogen safety
Best practices for safely working with BSL2 organisms and waste management
How to coordinate the repair and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation
Laws and regulations applicable to the position

Skill In:

Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and competence
Time management, organization, and ability to meet competing deadlines/priorities
Maintaining safe lab environments, and working safely with program equipment/supplies
Aseptic technique
Maintaining/documenting and sharing appropriate safety standards in lab and classroom environments

Handling difficult and sensitive situations, using sound independent judgment within College/legal guidelines
Writing/editing/proofreading clear and concise materials resulting in effective oral and written communication with diverse stakeholders
Establishing/maintaining effective working relationships at all organizational levels
Working with a diverse groups of students, staff, and the public in a friendly, courteous and helpful manner

Conditions of Employment

Physical Work Environment:
This position works primarily in biology teaching laboratories and an associated preparation/stock room, with time also spent in an office space.

The majority of working hours are spent in active laboratory settings supporting instruction in cell biology, microbiology, anatomy & physiology, zoology, botany, and related life science courses. Lab environments may include exposure to biological specimens, chemical reagents, and standard laboratory equipment. Some botany labs will take place in a campus greenhouse, which involves working in a warm, humid environment with live plants.

A significant portion of time is spent in the biology preparation and stockroom, where the technician prepares and disposes of reagents, washes and sterilizes glassware, maintains chemical and supply inventories, and organizes lab materials. This work requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and handling laboratory equipment and supplies. Time is also spent in an office setting using a computer for tasks such as ordering supplies, maintaining records, and corresponding with faculty.

This position requires the ability to lift and carry moderately weighted items, up to 50 lbs, such as boxes of supplies, glassware, and equipment. The ability to stand for extended periods, move between multiple work areas throughout the day, and work in environments with biological and chemical materials is essential.

Terms Of Employment/Salary:
This position is allocated to pay range 47, under the Washington State Office of Financial Management higher education salary schedule. Salary placement for new employees is determined by the College. This position works 40 hours per week, with a schedule dependent upon department needs. Hiring of this position is contingent on available funding as determined by the College President.
