Full Job Description

DEPARTMENT: Outpatient Services
REPORTS TO: Director of Surgery and Outpatient Services

SUMMARY:

Receives, decontaminates, inspects, assembles, packages, sterilizes, stores and distributes surgical instruments, equipment and supplies in accordance with established policies, procedures, quality standards and regulatory requirements to support safe and effective patient care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Receives, inspects and disassembles used instruments and equipment; verifies completeness and identifies missing or damaged items.
Performs cleaning and decontamination of instruments and equipment utilizing approved methods, detergents and equipment according to manufacturer instructions and hospital standards.
Inspects, assembles and tests instruments, trays and devices for proper function; identifies and reports defective or malfunctioning equipment.
Packages, labels and prepares instruments and supplies for sterilization using approved wrapping and containment systems.
Operates steam sterilizers and other sterilization equipment; monitors, records and interprets cycle parameters to ensure proper sterilization.
Performs biological, chemical and mechanical monitoring procedures and maintains accurate documentation of sterilization records.
Stores sterile instruments and supplies in a clean, dry and organized environment; maintains inventory and proper stock rotation.
Distributes sterile supplies and equipment to patient care areas in a timely and efficient manner.
Maintains a clean, safe and organized work environment; performs routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment and work surfaces.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
Attends meetings as required.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Works at both the hospital and LECOM ASC.

MANDATORY/STATUTORY QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.
Completion of an accredited Central Service/Sterile Processing Technician program preferred.
Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) preferred upon hire and required within eighteen (18) months of employment.
Certification through CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) may be accepted in lieu of CRCST certification.
Must maintain certification in good standing and meet continuing education requirements established by the certifying organization.
Basic computer skills required.

Education

An employee hired or contracted who is not certified shall obtain certification within eighteen (18) months of hire and maintain certification in accordance with applicable state and organizational requirements.
Certified personnel shall maintain all continuing education requirements necessary to remain in good standing with their certifying body.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education:
Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training

Physical Demands:
Extremely heavy effort (lift/carry 50 pounds or more)
Frequent prolonged standing and walking
Frequent bending, stooping, pushing and pulling
Manual dexterity and mobility
Ability to transport equipment and supply carts

Working Conditions:
Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens
May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases
Regularly exposed to bloodborne pathogens and body fluids
Exposed to hazardous chemicals, detergents and sterilizing agents
Exposed to sharp instruments and contaminated equipment
Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness)
Works in areas with heat, humidity and noise associated with sterilization equipment
