Full Job Description

Job Title: Boiler & Steam Turbine Plant Operator (MN Chief A License)

Reports To: Energy & Utilities Systems Coordinator

SUMMARY

Operates high-pressure steam boilers, steam turbines and other related steam systems auxiliary equipment, cooling towers, chiller/chilled water system, air compressors, water treatment systems, wells, and other related utilities type equipment.

This position works 12 hour rotating shifts, which include day and night shifts and every other weekend.

The successful candidate will have a keen eye for detail, a blend of technical know-how, and the ability to respond swiftly to any operational anomalies. Tasked with the meticulous operation, monitoring, and control of systems, this position plays a vital role in maintaining optimal production, efficiency, and safety of our operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Operate & maintain high-pressure boilers, steam turbines, related auxiliary and utilities type equipment.
Conduct regular inspections/rounds of steam & turbine plant to ensure safe, effective, and efficient operation.
Perform routine water testing of systems, maintain required analytical parameters with water treatment.
Possess mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills. Ability to troubleshoot issues and assist with repairs.
Develop a thorough knowledge of process flows, equipment locations, functions.
Ability to learn, follow, and understand – standard operating procedures, equipment manuals, P&ID’s
Ability to operate or learn to operate a forklift, skid steer, and other mobile equipment.
Ability to work independently or within a group and to make sound decisions.
Effective written and verbal communication. Keeping of detailed and accurate shift and operations logs.
Develop thorough knowledge and understanding of standard operating procedures for related equipment and strive to be able to perform the required tasks appropriately and without technical assistance.
Assist in creating, maintaining, and updating standard operating procedures.
Assist with the training and development of Boiler & Steam Turbine Plant Operators.
Follow all Company, Safety, and Security Policies and Procedures.
Promote, support, and maintain a clean, safe, and organized workplace as well as a positive, constructive, and cooperative culture within the workplace.
Fosters a positive team environment, acts professionally, treats others with respect and consideration.
Consistently at work and on time.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a current State of Minnesota Chief Class A Engineers license.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Experience with or ability to learn functions and use of computerized process control systems (DCS, PLC, etc) and their integration with the plant equipment and systems and/or applicable operator interface. Experience with and/or ability to learn functions and use of various other software programs (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel) and other platforms.

LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety procedures, safety data sheets, rules, operating and maintenance instructions, equipment manuals, standard operating procedures, and P&ID’s (Process and Instrumentation Diagrams). Ability to speak effectively before customers or employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding, logic/reasoning to carry out tasks and follow instructions furnished in written, oral, and/or diagram form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

This position requires a current State of Minnesota Chief Class A Engineers license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The physical demands are as follows, climb several flights of stairs, climb ladders, lift 50 lbs, work in variable weather conditions, work on high platforms, and work in confined spaces. Physical ability to perform manual labor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work in 100º F to -20º F temperatures, work on up to 80’ high platforms, and work in confined spaces. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Compensation: $42.00+ per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
