VALLEY COMMUNITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

POSITION TITLE: Coordinator of Children & Family Ministry

Status: Full-Time, 40 Hours per Week

Reports To: Head of Staff / Senior Pastor

Age Group Focus: Children (Birth–Grade 3), Youth (Grades 6–12), and Families

POSITION SUMMARY

The Coordinator of Family Ministry and Communications is a generative and relational role at the heart of our congregation’s ministry to the next generation. This person will invest in the spiritual formation of children, youth, and their families while also serving as the congregation’s voice to the broader public through social media and external communications.

This is a role for someone who loves people across generations, who can hold both the wonder of a kindergartner and the questions of a teenager with equal care. The ideal candidate brings energy, creativity, and organizational skill, and understands that ministry to young people is most fruitful when it equips and partners with families.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY (BIRTH-GRADE 3)

SUNDAY MORNING

Collaborate with the Faith Formation Lead and others to develop and lead engaging, age-appropriate Sunday morning programming for children birth through Grade 3
Ensure Sunday programming reflects sound theology, and a welcoming atmosphere for children and their families
Recruit, train, and schedule volunteers to support Sunday classrooms and the nursery
Maintain appropriate teacher-to-child ratios and uphold all Safe Church policies
Communicate regularly with parents about curriculum, children’s experiences, and ways to reinforce faith at home

WEEKDAY & SEASONAL PROGRAMMING

Develop and lead additional children’s programming throughout the week to build community and deepen faith formation
Create opportunities that connect families with one another and with the broader life of the congregation
Explore creative formats — family nights, parenting workshops, take-home resources — that equip parents as the primary faith-nurturers of their children
Serve as primary coordinator for the annual Christmas Pageant

VACATION BIBLE CAMP (VBC)

Serve as the primary coordinator and leader for the congregation’s annual Vacation Bible Camp in the summer
Select curriculum, recruit and train volunteers, manage logistics, and create a meaningful and memorable experience for children and families
Evaluate the program annually and bring recommendations for improvement to the Head of Staff

YOUTH MINISTRY (GRADES 6-12)

PROGRAMMING & DISCIPLESHIP

Plan and lead all regular youth group meetings throughout the program year, with a commitment to spiritual formation, community, and fun
Design a rhythm of gatherings that includes worship, teaching, fellowship, and service
Develop and lead seasonal and special events to deepen relationships and create memorable experiences for students

SUMMER MINISTRY

Coordinate and lead the annual summer mission trip, including all aspects of preparation, logistics, fundraising, and follow-up
Plan and execute additional summer programming to keep students engaged and connected during the break from school
Coordinate summer youth programming alongside VBC and other summer family ministry initiatives to ensure a coherent and well-staffed season

VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Actively recruit, equip, and support adult volunteers to serve as small group leaders and event helpers
Cast a compelling vision for youth ministry that invites others to invest
Provide training, encouragement, and regular communication to maintain a healthy volunteer team

CONNECTING GENERATIONS & FAMILIES

A distinctive opportunity of this combined role is the ability to build ministry across the full span of childhood and adolescence, and to create intentional connections between age groups and families:

Develop programming and experiences that connect children and youth ministry in meaningful ways
Partner with parents of children and teenagers to support their role as the primary spiritualnurturers of their kids
In collaboration with the Director of Congregational Life, recruit and coordinate a shared volunteer culture that serves both children’s and youth ministry

EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS

This position carries responsibility for communicating the life and mission of the church to the wider community:

Develop and maintain an active, engaging presence on the church’s social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook)
Create content that reflects the values, culture, and personality of the congregation
Coordinate with the Director of Congregational Life to ensure consistency between internal and external messaging
Assist with other public-facing communications as needed (e.g., community outreach, event promotion)

STAFF SUPPORT

Serve as a flexible team player who supports the Director of Congregational Life and Head of Staff with various tasks as ministry needs arise
Assist with congregation-wide events that benefit from additional staff support
Bring creativity and energy to shared staff projects

QUALIFICATIONS

A vibrant and growing Christian faith with a genuine love for children, teenagers, and families
Experience in children’s ministry, youth ministry, or a related field (experience in both is a plus)
Strong relational skills with the ability to connect meaningfully with multiple generations
Comfort with and enthusiasm for social media and digital communication tools
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple programs and projects simultaneously
Creativity and flexibility in developing ministry that is both theologically grounded and genuinely engaging
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a small staff
Must pass a background check and adhere to church Safe Church policies
Coursework or training in Christian education, youth ministry, or childhood development preferred

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Coordinator of Family Ministry and Communications reports directly to the Head of Staff and works in partnership with other staff members. Strong communication, mutual support, and a shared vision for ministry are essential to this working relationship.
