Job Location: This vacancy is for the Denver Correctional Complex. The eligibility list created from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES The Correctional Support Trades Supervisor II (CSLTS II) position is a Journeyman Plumber Lieutenant position for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) at the Denver Correctional Complex. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; ensuring the efficient and effective maintenance and repair of facility plumbing and other trade projects; supervisor of staff and inmate crews. This position promotes the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission, Vision, and Values while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment.
Safety and Security - position maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides staff and inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment, and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches; monitors workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity, or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises, and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas; position performs inmate counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications, and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment.
Supervision/Work Lead - Position provides safety and security through supervision or work lead responsibilities of assigned staff and inmate workers; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. Trains and instructs staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures to ensure efficient, safe and effective completion of assigned tasks; stresses safe construction practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff and inmates; exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior.
Staff Supervision/Work Lead - participates in hiring process by interviewing candidates and making recommendations; prepares performance plans, and conducts performance evaluations; resolves informal staff and/or inmate grievances. Assigns tasks, monitors and inspects work progress and ensures assigned staff receives required training; coaches, and mentors staff regarding agency supervision and processes and in preparation for career growth and opportunity.
Inmate Supervision - participates in the interview and hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on work crews and training needs are met; position ensures inmate workers are trained in all aspects of building, and grounds maintenance ( i.e., correct methods, tool use and care, reading blueprints, performing specific trades, planning a project) monitors project progress, inspects work, and ensures timely completion of tasks. Ensures inmate evaluations are completed, tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances according to agency policy; reduces inmate idleness, and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry.Position may provide supervisory duties for additional inmate crews in the absence of another supervisor.
Operations - Ensures safe and sanitary installation and reliable operation of all plumbing, HVAC and refrigeration, central plant, and other requisite services serving the Physical Plant. Position also ensures safe code compliant potable water service, drainage, and natural gas distribution systems, food service, and laundry by monitoring systems, effecting corrective action, direction related equipment, overseeing the work, and supervising inmate workers during all phases of work including estimating, pre-design, design review, installation, repair and/or replacement. Ensure reliable delivery of service at the facility by scheduling work and monitoring status and/or progress on numerous projects as assigned.
Position serves as Journeyman Plumber for the facility; oversees plumbing operations, to include new construction and repairs, as well maintenance of central plant, kitchen, laundry and medical equipment by monitoring systems and performing predictive and corrective maintenance. Position also assists with general maintenance operations. Reviews plans, researches code requirements, designs layout, schedules, and assigns tasks to subordinate staff and inmates. Coordinates with other units and trades when planning projects in order to maximize efficiency and minimize costs; monitors work as it's performed and inspects final product.
Position may be assigned to assist other trades supervisors and crews.
Inventory & Budget - position justifies and requests operating budget based on known and predicted needs and by conducting & tracking inventory and expenses; maintains accurate and on-going records of all projects, parts and equipment; anticipates replacement of tools, machines and equipment and maintains record of maintenance and service manuals in order to remain prepared for urgent, emergent and daily problems with plumbing, pipe-fitting and steam fitting; ensures implementation of processes to prevent/detect theft.
Position is subject to facility call back and working additional hours or shifts to ensure safety and security. Position is subject to schedules which include weekends, holidays, and various shift times. Position may work in close proximity to industrial equipment and/or in inclement weather.
