Full Job Description

● Brief Description: The Maintenance Technical Director serves as the senior technical authority responsible for overseeing the architecture, engineering, and maintenance of a complex, mission-critical cloud platform and associated applications. This role provides hands-on technical leadership for platform stability, reliability, and continuous improvement, ensuring all adaptive, perfective, preventive, and corrective maintenance activities meet established performance objectives including 99.995% incident-free availability for mission-critical applications and 99.95% for non-mission-critical applications.

● Responsibilities:

○ Provide hands-on technical leadership for all aspects of platform architecture, engineering, and maintenance, prioritizing platform stability and reliability

○ Ensure continuous compliance with AWS, EKS, and Kubernetes mandates, including cluster add-on versioning, node management, and standardized AMI deployment

○ Oversee orchestration and configuration management across all platform environments (production, staging, sandbox)

○ Coordinate platform dependency reviews and drive technical solution alignment with the Government's enterprise vision and VA Enterprise Architecture guidelines

○ Develop and maintain the comprehensive architecture package including High-Level Design (HLD) and Low-Level Design (LLD) documents suitable for Government briefings

○ Conduct and deliver Architecture, Engineering, and Maintenance Assessments identifying risks, gaps, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for improvement with prioritized remediation recommendations

○ Develop and maintain the comprehensive Maintenance Plan documenting maintenance schedules, milestones, recurring tasks, identified risks, and required resources

○ Oversee secrets management ensuring automated rotation for 100% of production secrets and manual rotation at least every 90 days

○ Manage environment configuration through Infrastructure as Code practices ensuring 100% of configurations are provisioned through approved IaC tooling

○ Oversee certificate management ensuring zero disruption to production services, 100% certificate renewal no later than 30 days prior to expiration, and automated issuance and rotation

○ Facilitate daily Change Control Board meetings, reviewing and presenting change requests to VA leadership for approval

○ Ensure all production changes are executed within approved change windows with documented backout and rollback plans

○ Perform post-implementation production verification testing within two hours of completing each production change

○ Oversee the Software Version Posture Report ensuring all platform software operates on VA TRM-approved versions with no end-of-support or end-of-life software in production

○ Produce and deliver Monthly Maintenance Reports tracking performance against all architecture, engineering, and maintenance standards

○ Coordinate closely with the Program Manager and Government technical leadership to ensure platform stability and reliability

● Qualifications:

○ Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership for complex enterprise cloud platforms and mission-critical systems in a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) environment

○ Experience supporting Federal Government programs and large-scale enterprise applications operating in cloud-based or hybrid environments

○ Deep expertise in system sustainment, platform engineering, and operational reliability practices

○ Hands-on experience with AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS), Kubernetes cluster management, container orchestration, and cloud-native platform operations

○ Experience with Infrastructure as Code tooling (Terraform or equivalent) for environment provisioning and configuration management

○ Knowledge of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), TLS certificate management, and secrets management practices

○ Experience with change management processes, Change Control Boards, and configuration management in enterprise environments

○ Experience managing platform maintenance across multiple environments (production, staging, development, sandbox)

○ Familiarity with software version lifecycle management including end-of-support, end-of-life tracking, and phased upgrade planning

○ AWS Solutions Architect Professional or equivalent AWS certification preferred

○ Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or equivalent certification preferred

○ ITIL Foundation or equivalent IT service management certification preferred

○ Bachelor's Degree from an accredited academic institution with a minimum of 10 years of experience in platform engineering, system sustainment, or cloud infrastructure management, with at least 5 years in a technical leadership role supporting mission-critical Federal Government systems

○ OR

○ Master's Degree from an accredited academic institution with a minimum of 7 years of experience in platform engineering, system sustainment, or cloud infrastructure management, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership role supporting mission-critical Federal Government systems

● Plus:

○ Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) experience

○ Active Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card

○ Experience with VA Technical Reference Model (TRM) governance and VA Enterprise Architecture compliance

○ Experience managing platforms supporting 200+ applications and services

Pay: Up to $170,000.00 per year
