Full Job Description

Position Overview

United Community School (UCS) is seeking a passionate, organized, and student-centered Exceptional Children (EC) Director / EC Coordinator to lead and support our special education program for students in grades K–8. This role is ideal for an educator who believes every child deserves access, opportunity, high expectations, and meaningful support.

The EC Director/Coordinator will oversee compliance, programming, student services, and collaboration efforts related to EC and 504 services while helping build an inclusive school culture where all students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities: Program Leadership & Compliance

Oversee the daily operations of the EC Department
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local EC regulations and timelines
Maintain accurate EC documentation and state reporting requirements
Coordinate referrals, evaluations, eligibility processes, and reevaluations
Serve as LEA representative for IEP meetings
Review and monitor IEPs, progress reports, and compliance documentation
Oversee and coordinate Section 504 plans and meetings

Student Support & Collaboration

Collaborate with teachers to ensure accommodations and modifications are implemented effectively
Support MTSS/intervention processes and problem-solving teams
Conduct classroom observations and provide instructional support
Partner with families to ensure strong communication and student advocacy
Help create inclusive learning environments that support student growth and independence
Work closely with school leadership, counselors, testing coordinators, and intervention staff

Team Development

Lead EC team meetings and provide coaching/support to EC staff
Support professional development related to special education best practices
Help strengthen systems, processes, and instructional practices across the school
Promote a collaborative, student-focused culture among staff

Qualifications Required

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Valid North Carolina EC teaching license and/or administrative licensure
Knowledge of IDEA, IEP processes, EC compliance, and Section 504 procedures
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
Experience working with elementary and/or middle school students
Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff

Preferred

Previous experience as an EC Coordinator, Lead EC Teacher, or EC Director
Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field
Experience in a charter school setting
Knowledge of MTSS and inclusive instructional practices
