Full Job Description

C5R builds facilities to connect physical AI to the real world.

We are based in San Francisco, and are hiring a research associate to run experiments in our materials lab, troubleshoot our protocols and help us build a new way of doing R&D.

This role is a good fit for somebody who wants to help AI get better at understanding science, who likes learning how to use new equipment, and who enjoys figuring out how to run new protocols, improve throughput and reduce errors.

You will be a fit if you have at least 1-2 years' experience working in a materials lab and have hands-on experience performing synthesis and characterization work.

We welcome applications from candidates with some experience working in labs focused on developing new batteries, magnetics, ceramics or alloys. If you have experience working in more than one lab, that is a plus.

What You Will Do

Synthesize ceramics, magnetics, batteries and alloys. Perform powder mixing and handling, heating and mixing, thermal processing, polishing.
Characterize the materials you produce, using X-ray diffractometers, Raman microscopes, electron microscopes, mass spectrometers and other instruments.
Assemble data on procedures, errors, throughput and quality and properties of the finished products.
Iron out the mistakes in protocols and repeat them until they are reliably low-error. Give your teammates feedback on design of experiments and protocols in order to improve them.
Give feedback on performance of experiments by robots and AIs.

What we're looking for

At least 2 years' experience working in materials labs.
Hands-on experience making and measuring new materials.
Experience with powder handling, mixing, thermal processing, working with fume hoods, cleanrooms or glove boxes, sample preparation, and maintaining and cleaning lab equipment.
Experience using x-ray diffractometers; It's a plus if you also have experience using any subset of: Electron microscopes, raman microscopes, mass spectrometers.
An undergrad degree in physics, materials science or engineering - or knowledge and experience equivalent to one.
Someone with attention to detail, who takes pride in running experiments well.
Someone who enjoys their work.
Ability to work onsite in San Francisco.
Ability to communicate clearly with your teammates, and with engineers and scientists.

Compensation And Terms

$70,000-$100,000 annualized for full-time.
Competitive equity package.
Temporary stints of at least 3 months may be possible.
This role is onsite in San Francisco only.
