Head of Engineering — build and own the technical foundation of a consumer startup

Hago Technologies, Washington, DC (remote friendly)

The opportunity:

Hago is a local household support platform that recently launched in the Washington, DC area. We connect busy people with trusted, vetted independent contractors — called Helpers — who tackle everyday tasks like tidying, organizing, laundry, pet care, errands, outdoor upkeep, and more. The convenience of Uber built on trust and quality, making getting help for everyday life simple. We've completed a pilot phase and are now in commercial launch.

We're looking for our first technical leader to own everything engineering at Hago. This is a ground-floor role with real ownership — you'll be the person who shapes how we scale, how consumers engage with our product, and eventually who we hire to build alongside us. If you've ever wanted to be the technical leader of a consumer startup without starting from scratch, this is that opportunity.

What you'll own:

Take over full technical ownership of the Hago platform from our existing agency — understanding what exists, what works, and what needs to evolve
Maintain and improve our Bubble.io application across the consumer booking experience and the Helper-facing side of the platform
Define our technical roadmap as we scale from early launch into a funded, growing company
Assess our current stack and make informed recommendations about when and how to migrate beyond Bubble.io as the business demands it, including developing our mobile app
Eventually hire and lead a small engineering team as we raise and grow
Be a thought partner to the founder on all product and technical decisions

Who we're looking for:

Proven Bubble.io experience — you can hit the ground running in our existing environment on day one
Full-stack sensibility — comfortable making architectural decisions across frontend, backend, and infrastructure
Experience as an early technical hire or founding engineer at a startup; you know what it means to build with limited resources
Consumer app experience — you've thought about booking flows, mobile UX, reliability, and the end-user experience
A builder's mindset — you're energized by ambiguity and ownership, not slowed down by it
Strong communicator — you can translate technical decisions for a non-technical founder and think in terms of business outcomes, not just code
Ready to lead — you're either experienced managing engineers or clearly ready to grow into that

Nice to have:

Experience with two-sided marketplaces or on-demand platforms
Familiarity with Stripe, payments infrastructure, or booking/scheduling logic
Experience scaling a product beyond a no-code or low-code foundation

Compensation & equity:

This is an equity-forward role. We offer a meaningful equity stake in Hago — real ownership in what you're building — while we're pre-fundraise. We are actively planning a fundraising round in the coming months. A core use of that capital is building out proper team compensation, including a competitive salary for this role. The right person understands the early-stage tradeoff and is motivated by what the upside looks like if we execute.

Hago is founded by a team with senior leadership experience at DoorDash, Uber, Lime and GoPuff, among others. We understand how platforms scale, where they break, and what it takes to build trust in a two-sided marketplace. We're not guessing at the playbook — we've lived it.

The household services market is massive, fragmented, and underserved by technology. Hago is building the infrastructure layer that doesn't yet exist for everyday home life. The person who builds the technical foundation of that company will have helped create something that matters — and will be rewarded accordingly.

This role requires someone who is genuinely excited about early-stage building. If you're looking for a fully funded company with a defined roadmap and a large team, this probably isn't the right fit. We're looking for the person who sees that as the feature, not the bug.
