The Youth Arts Academy (YAA) currently offers private music instruction, band and ensemble programs, school break camps, and community events for youth ages 5 - 18. We also support arts offerings in the Boys & Girls Clubs After-School Programs. Through YAA, these youth have access to a myriad of quality programs designed to stimulate their growth, creativity, and self-expression through the performing arts.

* Multi-instrumentalists are preferred for this position. We are seeking an instructor who can teach both piano and drums; however, we also welcome any pianists/drummers who can additionally teach guitar, strings, or wind instruments! Piano instruction is in high demand at YAA and we also need another drum instructor.
The music lessons take place from 3pm- 8pm Monday thru Fridays. Your work schedule would depend on how many students you take on, with a maximum of 25 hours per week.

The Youth Arts Academy (YAA) offers private music lessons, band and ensemble programs, community events, camps, and more for youth ages 5 - 18. Under the supervision of the YAA Program Manager, instructors will utilize a broad knowledge of instructional materials and methods to guide students to meet their goals and needs. Instructor schedules are flexible and will be based on instructor and space availability. YAA supports instructors by handling all billing, scheduling, advertising, and planning, so instructors can focus on providing high-quality lessons to students. All YAA Instructors will uphold the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest San Diego values and Youth Arts Academy mission to stimulate growth, creativity, and self-expression through the arts.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide private music lessons for members of Youth Arts Academy that are structured, consistent, and educational, and which promote personal growth, creativity, and self-expression.
- Maintain and teach at a high level of proficiency and technique on musical instruments.
- Assign music literature that is developmentally and age-appropriate, interesting, and challenging for students.
- Facilitate open communication with both students and parents regarding weekly practice tasks, student expectations, attendance, and performance opportunities.
- Involve and encourage students to set good practice habits, set realistic goals in their musical practice, and participate in YAA recitals, events, and performances.
- Advise students and parents on vendors for music instrument rental & purchase, music literature, proper instrument maintenance and care, and at-home practice expectations.
- Maintain clean and organized music studios and shared spaces and maintain equipment, informing supervisor of any needed repairs.
- Support YAA performances, recitals, and recruitment events by setting up and tearing down, stage management, marketing/community outreach, student instruction/direction, production, and speaking on behalf of YAA as assigned.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as a member of the YAA team by attending monthly team meetings, assisting in program design, planning, and implementation, supporting recruitment and performance events, and maintaining shared spaces.
- Serve as a leader for ensembles, rock bands, jazz bands, camps, etc. if interested.
- Serve as substitute teacher for other YAA instructors’ students as needed.
- Maintain up-to-date trainings and screenings as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED certificate
- CPR & First Aid certification (training will be provided)
- Drug screening
- At least 1 year professional experience in chosen instrument(s).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, or related field
- 5 years professional experience in chosen instrument(s). A combination of education and related experience is applicable.
- 5 years of teaching children ages 5 -18 in a private studio, school, or other setting.
- Working musicians/teachers are preferred.
- Multi-instrumentalists are preferred.
- Musicians with experience playing in ensembles/bands are preferred.
- Musicians with working knowledge in event coordination & administration are preferred.
- To serve our diverse body of students and families, instructors who speak multiple languages are highly encouraged to apply. Specifically, instructors who can speak Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and/or Tagalog.

Mental Requirements
Must possess excellent written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills. Must be able to project a positive company image and interact professionally with customers, vendors, and at all levels of company management.
This position requires the ability to perform work in an office setting as well as in a highly interactive and stimulating environment with youth participants.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to perform office-related tasks, such as operating a photocopy machine, performing minor lifting (chairs, supply bins, instrument cases, etc), reading and typing on a computer, and communicating both in person and over the telephone. Heavier objects like stage equipment (up to 50 lbs) may need to be moved for event prep.
