Internship Opportunity: Social & Human Service Intern

Hours Expected: 14 hours per week minimum
Duration: Fall 2026 / Spring 2027 /and or Summer 2026
Schedule: Create you own schedule based on our operating hours: Monday- Friday, 8am -5pm!

About Us:
The Broad Center (also known as Broadway Community and Activity Center) is a nonprofit community center and Opioid Overdose Prevention Program (OOPP) based in the heart of Brooklyn, New York. At our core is a mission to serve New Yorkers facing systemic poverty, housing insecurity, and unmet health needs –chronic illness or substance use. We provide integrated, trauma-informed services designed to meet people where they are and walk alongside them toward stability and wellness.
As a recognized harm reduction site, we work in partnership with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) to deliver community-centered care, public health education, and prevention services.
Internship Overview:

As a Social & Human Service Intern, you will gain hands-on experience working at a community center that serves diverse populations and age groups, including families, young adults, and elders living in marginalized communities throughout NYC. You will work directly with clients from low socioeconomic backgrounds who are dealing with substance use and mental health disorders. You will work alongside an Outreach Specialist trained in Motivational Interviewing, gaining valuable skills in client interaction, harm reduction, and community outreach.
Qualifications:
- Undergrad majoring in social work, psychology, criminal justice, public health, or any other related field
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook)
- Comfortable engaging with the vulnerable populations
- Reliable and punctual with a professional attitude
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- A self-starter with a strong desire to learn/ ability to pick up new skills quickly
- Genuine passion for working in nonprofit, harm reduction, or supporting marginalized communities.
- Prior experience in social services or community programs is a plus but not required
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is highly preferred but not required.

Internship Responsibilities (*training provided*):
Depending on your experience and interests, you will be assigned roles from one or more of the following categories. Lead/Mentor roles are available.
Administration:
- Manage and support client cases received through a referral platform
- Contact potential clients to schedule appointments on their behalf.
- Input and manage client assessment data
- Conduct client intake, filling paperwork, maintain daily report sheets, and perform other admin tasks as needed.
Outreach & Fundraising:
- Conduct overdose prevention outreach alongside Outreach Specialists, providing harm reduction materials to individuals who use substances.
- Conduct community-based outreach by distributing brochures to promote services to potential clients
- Draft fundraising events and assist with managing space rentals & ticketed events.
Grant & Social Media:
- Assist in researching and drafting grant proposals, while meeting submission deadlines
- Gather required data/documents and assist in developing project budgets
- Manage the center’s social media by capturing photos of daily activities and posting content regularly.
Workshop:
- Create and facilitate Group Sessions (once trained by the Program Coordinator) focused on educational, health, physical and the arts.
- Assist the Program Coordinator with the creation and facilitation of workshops
- Maintain and update the incentive points tracking sheet.
General Responsibilities:
- Shadow the Outreach Specialist to learn Motivational Interviewing skills
- Shadow a Case Manager/Patient Navigator to understand how to help clients navigate the system
- Assist with the day-to-day activities of the center (Breakfast and Lunch distribution, Day Programs, and Intake)

A:You may select your own start/end date, as long as it falls within the first & last month of the internship term!
Q:I don’t have prior experience in human services, nonprofit, or community services. Am I still eligible to apply?
A: Prior experience is not required, though it is preferred. Applicants with a background in customer service will also be considered. What matters most is a positive, professional, and Go-getter attitude, along with a genuine passion to help the marginalized community!
Q: I’m hoping to receive academic credit for this internship. Would you be able to assist with that?
A: Yes! Many of our interns have successfully received academic credit through our program. Just be sure to share your school’s requirements with us and obtain prior approval from your academic advisor.
Q: What qualities are you looking for in a candidate, and what type of personality do you think is best suited for this position?
A: We’re looking for someone who is extroverted, personable, and empathetic—someone who enjoys engaging with others and takes initiative. Being an overachiever with a strong work ethic and a genuine passion for helping people is highly valued in this role.
