Position: Laboratory Support Specialist (Lab Clerk/Assistant Hybrid)

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Full-Time)
Compensation: $15–$20 per hour
Employment Type: Full-Time
Department: Clinical Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory

Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Laboratory Support Specialist to support the daily operations of our clinical molecular diagnostics laboratory. This position plays a vital role in ensuring efficient laboratory workflow by receiving and accessioning patient specimens, verifying patient and insurance information, supporting insurance billing, managing laboratory inventory, and maintaining accurate laboratory documentation.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, able to multitask in a fast-paced environment, and committed to maintaining the quality, accuracy, and efficiency required in a CLIA-certified clinical laboratory.

Primary ResponsibilitiesSpecimen Receiving & Accessioning

Receive, inspect, and accession incoming patient specimens
Verify patient demographics, specimen labeling, and requisition accuracy
Evaluate specimens for acceptability according to laboratory criteria
Document specimen receipt and accession information in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
Resolve specimen discrepancies by communicating with healthcare providers and clients
Prepare and route specimens for laboratory testing

Insurance Billing & Administrative Support

Verify patient insurance information and demographic data
Assist with insurance billing, claim submission, and claim follow-up
Review requisitions for completeness and accuracy
Maintain confidential patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations
Support general administrative and clerical laboratory functions

Inventory & Laboratory Support

Receive laboratory supply and reagent shipments
Organize, label, and stock laboratory reagents, consumables, and supplies
Monitor inventory levels and notify supervisors when supplies require replenishment
Maintain reagent lot numbers, expiration dates, and inventory records
Assist with purchasing and inventory management
Prepare laboratory materials and supplies for daily testing operations

Quality & Compliance

Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and records
Follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Adhere to CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements
Assist with quality assurance activities and laboratory inspections
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment

QualificationsRequired

High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree in a life science or healthcare-related field preferred but not mandatory)
Strong computer and data entry skills
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Preferred

Experience with specimen accessioning or laboratory operations
Experience using a Laboratory Information System (LIS)
Experience with medical insurance verification and billing
Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality requirements
Experience managing laboratory inventory or medical supplies
Experience in a medical office, clinical laboratory, healthcare administration, or related environment

Technical Skills

Preferred experience with:

Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)
Microsoft Office Suite
Medical insurance verification and billing
Data entry and document management
Inventory management
Customer service and professional communication

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
Ability to lift and move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds
Frequent use of computers, barcode scanners, and office equipment
Ability to perform repetitive tasks with accuracy and attention to detail

Work Environment

This position is based in a CLIA-certified clinical molecular diagnostics laboratory. The Laboratory Support Specialist works closely with laboratory personnel to ensure specimens, supplies, and administrative processes are managed efficiently while maintaining compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
