Activity-related hazards involve burn or heat sources, compressed gases, electrical cords and tools, energized equipment, and possible exposure to contagious diseases or bloodborne pathogens. Ergonomic hazards include lifting, awkward postures, repetitive motions, and prolonged sitting or standing. Specific job functions increase these risks: sitting for long periods can lead to back, shoulder, hand, and arm injuries, as well as eye strain; standing for extended periods can cause strains, sprains, and leg or knee injuries; walking throughout the building presents the risk of slips, trips, falls, and strain injuries; and cleaning up spills or handling specimens can expose employees to chemical hazards, cuts, punctures, or bloodborne pathogens. Working with or setting up laboratory equipment adds risks of strain, pinch points, cuts, punctures, and slips. Sterilizing workstations also poses chemical and pathogen exposure hazards.
