Reports to: Director of Operations

The Uncommon Business is hiring our first dedicated Security and IT Lead to build and own the security function from the ground up. This role covers cybersecurity, application security, IT operations, and device management for a fast-scaling, AI-first company. You will set the security standard our internal build team ships against, audit 10+ internally-built software tools, secure how personal data flows through our AI and automation systems, and manage devices and access for a distributed remote team of nearly 30. This role reports to the Director of Operations.

What you'll do

Own the company's overall security posture, including two-factor authentication (2FA), password management, access reviews, and backup verification
Audit 10+ internally-built software tools that handle real customer, student, and lead data, and set remediation timelines for the build team
Oversee application security and AI/API data security, including how personal data flows through LLMs, automations, and third-party API integrations
Read and assess code (Python, JavaScript, SQL, API integrations) well enough to evaluate internal tools and direct engineering remediation
Manage company asset inventory end to end, including hardware procurement, tracking, and recovery
Set up new hires with laptops, software, and account access, and recover and wipe devices the same day an employee departs
Administer Google Workspace and manage access controls across Slack, Zoom, and internal systems for a distributed team
Run day-to-day IT help desk support for a remote team of nearly 30
Document all systems, credential paths, and recovery procedures to maintain business continuity

What you'll need

Required:

5 or more years of experience in cybersecurity, IT operations, or a combined role, with at least 2 years owning security for a team or organization
Demonstrated experience in application security and AI/API data security, not just network or device-level security
Ability to read and assess code (Python, JavaScript, SQL, API integrations) well enough to audit internal tools and direct a build team on remediation
Hands-on experience administering Google Workspace and managing access controls for a distributed remote team
Track record of rolling out security fundamentals: 2FA, password management, access reviews, and same-day offboarding protocols
Experience managing a company asset inventory, including hardware procurement, tracking, and recovery

Preferred:

Relevant certification such as CompTIA Security+, CISSP, CEH, or equivalent
Experience with MDM platforms for remote device management
Familiarity with AI data governance and how personal data flows through LLM-based tools and automations
Experience supporting a fast-scaling, remote-first company

How success is measured

100% of the team enrolled in 2FA and password management, with access reviews and backups completed on schedule
Every internal software tool on a recurring security review cycle with zero known critical vulnerabilities left open
Complete and accurate asset inventory maintained at all times, with same-day device recovery on departure
New hires fully equipped within 4 business hours of start date
90% of internal IT support requests resolved within one business day
Core business tools maintained at 99%+ uptime during high-traffic launch periods

Schedule expectations

Must be flexible and available for additional hours and weekend work during launch seasons, product releases, or critical business periods when the situation requires it. We operate in championship-season cycles twice per year, high-intensity windows where the entire team rallies to deliver exceptional results. Outside these periods, workload is sustainable and focused on building systems for the next surge.
