The Junior Engineer, Computer supports technical and training teams providing training and software support to U.S. Navy Sailors on the Tactical Tomahawk Weapon Control System (TTWCS), a critical weapon system supporting our nation's defense. This position offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with Navy combat systems, software development, and training technologies while supporting the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division (NSWC PHD).

Position Description:
We are looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join our team to support the delivery of dynamic learning experiences, web applications, and integrated software deliverables. As a Junior Software Engineer, you will be working in all aspects of product development, from ideation to deployment and beyond. In addition, you will work with our data team to make our products smarter and more intuitive to use, and you will need to work with the broader company to maintain and help optimize existing systems. This position will support a variety of projects and will be responsible for supporting existing infrastructure as well as developing new technologies. The ideal person for this role is a problem-solver with an inquisitive and innovative mind, who loves to collaborate with other teams to drive the company forward.
YOU MUST BE ELIGIBLE TO OBTAIN A DOD SECURITY CLEARANCE
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Effectively correspond with internal team members and customer/external team members by following established communication/correspondence protocols.
- Consult with client or product owner to determine functional, visual and logical needs for new or existing products, and prepare information regarding software design patterns, specifications, scope, code structure, use cases, and deployment.
- Participate in development and planning meetings.
- Integrate software into existing systems.
- Develop front-end and back-end website architecture.
- Ensure cross-platform optimization for applications.
- Work alongside graphic designers for web application and software features.
- Code, test, debug, and install modified and new programs.
- Prepare and review documentation for new software products including but not limited to software overview, class definitions, examples, and repository information.
- Maintain integrity of program logic and coding and establish required checks and balances for operational controls.
- Remain knowledgeable and up to date on current version of the software in use and coding standards.
- Develop and conduct various training and instruction activities for new product applications as needed.
- Act as a primary stakeholder in any phase of the development process.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accountability for assigned tasks.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in computer science, information management, or equivalent degree or experience.
- 0-2 years of hands-on experience creating public, complex systems using multiple languages.
- Familiarity with CSS, HTML5, and JavaScript.
- Familiarity with at least one (1) JavaScript Framework such as CreateJS, React, Angular JS and Ember.
- Familiarity with at least one (1) server-side language such as Python, PHP or Java.
- Familiarity with at least one (1) Backend Framework such as Laravel, CodeIgniter, Express, or Ruby on Rails.
- Understanding your own limits and how to work on a deadline.
- Feel at home working in a test-driven, agile team.
- Commitment to technical design, planning and documentation.
- Familiarity with working in repositories (like Subversion or GIT), bug tracking (like JIRA or Redmine), and project management/online collaboration.
- Ability to work in a high-volume production environment with tight project deadlines.
- High degree of professionalism, adherence to high quality standards, and attention to detail.
- Must be a U.S. citizen and be able to pass a background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.

- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information management, or equivalent degree or experience.
- Three (3) years of hands-on experience creating public, complex systems using multiple software languages.
- Experience working and collaborating in projects with multiple developers.
- Familiarity with web application development with the Amazon Web Services (AWS) ecosystem.
- Familiarity with database technologies such as MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle or MongoDB.
- Experience with Linux operating systems (any distribution) including troubleshooting and command-line operations.
- Experience with PHP or Node.js frameworks.
- Experience working with and demonstrated understanding of Section 508 compliance as it pertains to product/software design.
- Experience with process and workflow analysis and improvement (such as ISO 9000).
- SCORM and LMS integration experience.
- Developing and maintaining custom plugins and themes.

The pay range for this role is:
60,000.00 - 100,000.00 USD per year (Austin)
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Support software development, testing, and implementation activities for Navy training and combat system applications.
- Assist in developing, modifying, and maintaining software applications and system enhancements.
- Participate in software testing, debugging, and quality assurance activities.
- Support software integration and system upgrade efforts.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of technical documentation and training materials.
- Work with senior engineers to troubleshoot software and hardware issues.
- Participate in code reviews and software development lifecycle activities.
- Support database maintenance and data management activities.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure system functionality and performance requirements are met.
- Travel as required to support customer sites, testing events, and training activities.
Required Qualifications
- Active DoD Secret Security Clearance.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
- 3-5 years of experience in software development, software engineering, computer engineering, systems engineering, or related technical fields.
- Experience supporting software development, testing, integration, and maintenance activities.
- Familiarity with software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes and quality assurance practices.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a technical team.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with programming languages such as Java, C++, C#, or Python through coursework, internships, personal projects, or professional experience.
- Familiarity with JavaScript, HTML, and web-based applications.
- Experience using Linux operating systems and command-line tools.
- Familiarity with Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio, Eclipse, or IntelliJ.
- Exposure to relational databases such as SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
- Understanding of software testing and quality assurance practices.
- Internship, co-op, military, or academic project experience related to software development or systems engineering.
- Interest in Navy combat systems, defense technologies, or military training systems.
