UTAH COMMUNICATIONS AUTHORITY JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: RF Field Technician

Status: Full Time

FLSA Exempt: Non-Exempt

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: The RF Field Technician will be responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining two-way radio and ancillary equipment related to the UCA radio networks.

EXAMPLES OF TASKS/DUTIES:

Install, repair and maintain the following types of equipment:
800 MHz conventional and trunked radio systems
VHF and UHF conventional radios
Transmission lines
RF antennas
Tower Top Amplifiers
Voting systems
Duplexers, filters and suppression devices
Equipment alarming and site alarm systems
Microwave radios
Waveguide and microwave dishes
Channel banks
DSX and MUX equipment
Networking components; switches and routers
Lightning and commercial power surge protection
Grounding systems and components
Solar panels, controllers, converters and inverters
DC Charging systems
DC Battery systems
Console and related equipment in dispatch or 911 call centers

Keep an inventory of commonly used repair / replacement parts.
Accurately track parts sent in for factory repair.
Work with UCA management and planner on current and future needs associated with the overall system operation.
Attend meetings as required.
Regular attendance.
Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

(Includes knowledge, skills, and abilities required upon entry into position and trainable after entry into position)

Degree in electronics, communications, or two years working as a RF field technician.
Knowledge of RF theory and practical applications.
Troubleshooting and diagnostic skills in RF, Microwave, power and signaling.
Knowledge of AC/DC power systems.
Knowledge of microwave radio communications.
Basic to advanced understanding of how dispatch centers, 911 call centers and remote radio operator positions work.
Ability to read schematics and wiring diagrams.
Knowledge of T-1 hierarchy, theory and applications.
Knowledge of Ethernet and networking applications.
Must obtain the proper certification to climb and work on towers.
Ability to safely climb and install equipment on towers such as coaxial feed lines, waveguide, antennas, microwave dishes, tower hardware, grounding equipment, etc.
Basic to advanced understanding of emergency generators and transfer panels.
Ability to properly and safely load and haul cargo and flatbed trailers.
Ability to safely operate four-wheel drive trucks on mountain roads.
Ability to safely operate ATV's, snowmobiles, snowcats, or other off-road vehicles.
Basic to advanced computer skills; ability to use a wide variety of software and hardware applications to communicate and diagnose remote equipment.
Program end user radio equipment as well as site radios and ancillary equipment.
Professional communication and organizational skills.
Must be able to work alone and as part of a team.
Knowledge of and proper usage of UCA purchasing policies.
Ability to properly use many types of basic to advanced test equipment including the following:
Digital Multi Meters
Watt Meters
Service monitors
Spectrum analyzers
TBERD test equipment
Oscilloscopes
Antenna sweepers

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Risks found in the field environment will include: working and driving in adverse weather conditions, working long hours, lifting heavy objects, traveling the state, working on remote mountain top sites for extended periods of time.
Being on call.

Pay: $20.00 - $40.00 per hour
