Full Job Description

People’s Express is a growing nonprofit transportation provider serving Southeast Michigan. The HR Generalist serves as a key member of the organization's administrative team by managing day-to-day human resources functions and supporting a positive, inclusive workplace culture. This position is responsible for recruitment, onboarding, compliance, payroll, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management, training coordination, and HR recordkeeping. The HR Generalist is the initial contact to the team for all HR inquiries and partners with leadership to ensure HR practices align with the organization's mission, values, and strategic goals.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on HR professional who can effectively manage multiple HR functions in a small nonprofit environment while maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and a strong commitment to employee engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Recruitment & Onboarding

Coordinate full-cycle recruitment activities, including job postings, candidate sourcing, screening, interviewing, and hiring.
Facilitate new employee onboarding and orientation programs.
Ensure completion of all employment documentation and background screening processes.

Compliance & HR Administration

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
Maintain accurate employee personnel files and HR records.
Administer leave programs, including FMLA, ADA accommodations, and other applicable policies.
Assist with policy development, updates, and implementation.
Prepare HR reports and metrics for leadership.

Payroll Support

Partner with payroll providers to ensure accurate employee data and payroll processing.
Maintain employee records related to compensation, deductions, and employment status changes.
Review payroll inputs for accuracy and compliance.

Benefits & Compensation Administration

Administer employee benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plan, leave programs, FMLA and wellness initiatives.
Serve as primary point of contact for employee benefits inquiries.
Assist with compensation analyses and salary administration.
Support annual open enrollment activities.

Employee Relations

Serve as a resource for employees and managers regarding HR policies, procedures, and workplace concerns.
Assist in resolving employee relations issues in a fair, professional, and confidential manner.
Support employee engagement initiatives and recognition programs.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission-driven workplace culture.

Performance Management & Training

Coordinate performance evaluation processes and employee development initiatives.
Assist managers with performance improvement plans and coaching strategies.
Identify training needs and coordinate learning opportunities.
Maintain training records and compliance certifications.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field preferred.
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience

2-3 years of progressive human resources experience.
At least 1 year of payroll processing is preferred. Paychex experience a plus.
Knowledge of benefits administration.
Leave administration experience a plus.
Demonstrated experience in multiple HR functional areas, including recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, payroll and compliance.

Certifications

SHRM-CP, PHR, or other HR certification preferred.

Note: This is not all inclusive. The possibility of additional business-driven assignments does exist.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS/payroll systems.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small-team environment.

Strong customer service orientation and relationship-building skills.

Working Conditions

In office.
May require sitting, standing, and computer use for extended periods.

CLASSIFICATION: For purposes of employment standards, this classification is “non-exempt” from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. This is a full-time, hourly position and is eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable federal and state laws.

SALARY AND COMPENSATION: Commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, 401k match, vacation, PTO, holidays and 2 floating holidays.

This role is an in-office position with occasional work from home.

Pay: $25.00 - $26.00 per hour
