RN – OR Circulator

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR: RN OR Circulator/PACU Nurse

REPORT TO: Clinical Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibility of this position is to provide nursing care to ensure the safety of the patient during their stay in the surgical suite

DUTIES OF THE JOB:

A. To utilize specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while giving direct and indirect patient care.

1. Performs assessment of patient for specific nursing care needed.
2. Plans care to ensure patient safety.
3. Directs and assists in carrying out safe aseptic & sterile techniques and procedures.
4. Supervises and directs the activities of non-professional personnel as necessary.

B. To perform the tasks specific to the OR Circulator role.

1. Checks room for needed supplies and prepares room for specific patient and procedure.

2. Assist in transporting patient to O.R. and checks patient record for appropriate pre- op preparation and procedures (i.e. lab, x-ray, appropriate permits).

3. Performs and/or directs appropriate surgical prep.
4. Completes documentation for O.R. records, laboratory requisitions, and patient chart including medications and physician orders.
5. Directs proper care of instruments, supplies, sterilization, and storage of equipment.
6. Supervises and assists with the proper, safe positioning of the patient.
7. Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts and documentation of same.
8. Identifies, labels, and cares for all surgical specimens properly.
9. Secures emergency equipment and supplies as needed.
10. Controls the general “tone” of the operating room.

C. To perform tasks specific to the PACU Nurse role

1. Responsible for the patient’s post-operative care and stabilization; holistic preparation for return to the home environment, considering all needs, including post-discharge care, escort/family members, educational and psychosocial needs, and acting under established protocols, practices, and standing orders.

2. Performs thorough and accurate continual patient assessment, anticipating potential problems and reporting pertinent assessments to the anesthesiologist/CRNA, supervisor, and/or surgeon appropriately.

3. Documents actions in medical record completely and accurately in a timely manner.

4. Keeps safety of patient, self, and others a primary concern at all times; acts appropriately in an emergency situation.

5. Acts as discharge nurse when assigned, giving holistic and thorough discharge education.

6. Demonstrates good nursing knowledge base and rationale for actions, including cardiac monitoring.

RN – OR Circulator

D. To function efficiently as a member of surgical team.

1. Provides assistance to team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed (i.e. reliability, working relations, initiative, training needs).

2. Reviews physicians’ preference cards and updates as needed.
3. Assists in stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

E. To support quality activities.

1. Develop communication skills and promote departmental relationships to ensure continuity of care.

2. Participates in on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care.

3. Maintains current CPR certification and any advanced life support certifications.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and be currently licensed to practice nursing
A minimum of one year experience in the operating room
The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently as well as function within a team
have the ability to assess patient needs, determine priorities, plan and direct care for the surgical patient, and must possess the ability to handle stress

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Physical and mental – 80% walking, standing, pushing, pulling, required to move patients.
Potential exists for exposure to blood and body fluids as well as other hazardous materials.
Personal protective equipment should be utilized as needed.
Must have a thorough knowledge of general nursing theory and practice
A knowledge of operating room technique
Possess strong organization skills and flexibility
Present good communication skills
Have the ability to assess priorities
present a professional image
Be able to handle periods of stress
