Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Building Automation Controls Technician to install, program, commission, and maintain building automation and HVAC control systems. The primary objective of this role is to ensure reliable, energy-efficient operation of HVAC equipment and BAS platforms across commercial and industrial facilities through hands-on troubleshooting, system integration, and proactive maintenance. The ideal candidate is a field-focused technician with strong HVAC controls experience and the ability to work with a variety of BAS protocols and vendors.
Key Responsibilities

Install, wire, and commission building automation system (BAS) controllers, sensors, actuators, and field devices for HVAC equipment (RTUs, AHUs, chillers, boilers, VFDs).

Program and configure control sequences using vendor tools and platforms; implement logic, schedules, alarms, and setpoints to meet design and operational requirements.

Perform site troubleshooting and repair of HVAC control systems, including electrical troubleshooting, relay logic, PLC interfaces, and sensor calibration.

Integrate multiple subsystems and communicate devices via BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus RTU/TCP, LonWorks, RS-485 and Ethernet/IP as required.

Support system commissioning, startup, testing and balancing (TAB), and field calibration to ensure systems meet performance specifications.

Perform data logging, trend analysis, fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), and recommend corrective actions and energy optimization measures.

Maintain accurate documentation: as-built control wiring diagrams, point lists, startup reports, and service logs.

Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and subcontractors during installation, retrofit, and upgrade projects to ensure code compliance and project timelines.

Provide routine preventive maintenance, firmware updates, and remote troubleshooting via SCADA/HMI and BAS workstations.

Train facilities staff and end users on BAS operation, alarm response, and best practices for maintaining system health.
Qualifications

Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience as a controls technician working with HVAC controls and building automation systems (BAS).

Demonstrated technician-level skills installing, wiring, and troubleshooting field devices, sensors, and control panels.

Proficiency with common BAS protocols and system integration: BACnet (IP/MS/TP), Modbus (RTU/TCP), LonWorks, RS-485 and Ethernet/IP networking fundamentals.

Experience programming and configuring controllers and graphical interfaces on platforms such as Tridium Niagara (AX/N4), Automated Logic, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens, Schneider or similar systems preferred.

Familiarity with Direct Digital Controls (DDC), PLC programming, relay logic, PID tuning, and pneumatic control systems.

Hands-on experience with HVAC equipment: rooftop units (RTU), air handling units (AHU), chillers, boilers, VFD integration, humidity/pressure control and related sensors (temperature, CO2).

Experience with commissioning & startup procedures, testing and balancing (TAB), field calibration, data logging and trend analysis, and fault detection & diagnostics (FDD).

Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, ability to read and produce control wiring and schematic diagrams, and work safely on energized equipment.

Ability to travel to customer sites, work in mechanical rooms and at heights, and lift/handle control panels and instruments.

Relevant certifications (e.g., EPA 608, NICET, NATE, or vendor-specific certifications) and technical diploma or associate degree in HVAC, controls, electrical or related field are a plus.

Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with engineers, facilities staff, and project teams.
