THE GOAL OF THE ROLE:
NYVT Media is seeking an energetic and community-focused Community Reporter / Multimedia Journalist to help expand local news coverage throughout our communities in Washington County, NY.
The ideal candidate is passionate about local journalism, enjoys meeting people, attending community events, uncovering unique stories, and producing engaging content across print and digital platforms. This role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact while helping develop a locally owned and operated media organization.
The successful candidate will cover local government, schools, businesses, nonprofits, community events, and feature stories while building strong relationships throughout the communities we serve.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting & Writing
- Research, write, and produce news and feature stories.
- Attend local government meetings and public events.
- Conduct interviews with community members, business leaders, elected officials, and organization representatives.
- Develop original story ideas and follow leads.
- Meet established story and publication deadlines.
- Maintain journalistic accuracy and integrity.
Community Coverage
- Build relationships throughout assigned coverage areas.
- Serve as a visible representative of NYVT Media within the community.
- Identify emerging stories and community issues.
- Attend community events, fundraisers, festivals, school functions, and public meetings.
Photography & Content Collection
- Capture photos to accompany stories.
- Gather quotes, background information, and supporting materials.
- Assist with multimedia content as needed.
- Maintain organized photo and content files.
Digital & Newsletter Support
- Assist with website and newsletter content.
- Submit content for digital publication.
- Help identify stories that perform well across digital platforms.
- Support social media content initiatives when needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must Have
- Strong writing and communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Reliable transportation and valid driver's license.
- Ability to attend evening and weekend events when necessary.
- Comfort using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and basic technology tools.Strongly Preferred
- Degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Public Relations, or related field.
- Previous newspaper, media, or writing experience.
- Photography experience.
- Experience covering community events.
- Familiarity with AP Style.
- Knowledge of local communities throughout Washington County, NY.

Within the First 12 Months, This Person Will
- Establish a consistent editorial workflow.
- Build a reliable network of freelance contributors.
- Improve the quality and consistency of local coverage.
- Expand community engagement throughout our coverage areas.
- Help grow the editorial department to support future expansion.
- Maintain on-time publication schedules across all products.
