Background

The Office of U.S. Representative Greg Stanton seeks a Legislative Assistant for the Washington, D.C. office. The Legislative Assistant will manage a substantive policy portfolio that includes trade, labor, and small business, while supporting the Congressman’s broader legislative priorities.

The ideal candidate is a strong writer and policy thinker who can move comfortably between research, stakeholder engagement, legislative strategy, constituent needs, and public-facing communications. The position requires sound judgment, attention to detail, discretion, and the ability to work in a fast-moving congressional office.

Core Responsibilities

Legislative & Policy Portfolio Management

Lead and execute the Congressman’s legislative priorities within assigned issue areas, including trade, labor, and small business
Draft legislative memos, talking points, constituent responses, briefing materials, and other written products
Work with staff to develop and advance legislation
Track policy developments, legislation, and committee activity relevant to assigned portfolio

Stakeholder Engagement & External Relations

Meet with constituents, advocacy organizations, industry representatives, and other stakeholders to inform policy development
Build and maintain relationships with key partners
Identify strategic opportunities through stakeholder engagement and coalition building
Support the office’s Constituent Advisory Council program by providing legislative updates and support to assigned councils
Serve as a point of contact for stakeholders on assigned issue areas

Legislative Strategy & Office Coordination

Work closely with senior staff to support legislative strategy
Coordinate with the Public Advocacy team to identify constituent needs and translate them into policy priorities
Collaborate across teams to align legislative work, constituent services, and communications

Communications & Message Development

Work with the Communications, Creative, and Public Engagement teams to highlight legislative priorities and successes
Contribute policy content for press, digital, and public messaging
Ensure consistency between legislative work and external communications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience
Exceptional writing, research, and analytical skills
Strong judgment and ability to handle sensitive information
Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team
Demonstrated interest in public service

Preferred Qualifications

Prior Capitol Hill experience
Experience handling trade, labor, small business, or related economic policy issues
Experience engaging with stakeholders or supporting legislative efforts
Experience drafting legislative memos, briefing materials, talking points, constituent correspondence, or similar written products

Working Conditions

Based in the Washington, D.C. office
Requires extended hours as needed to support the legislative schedule or breaking news events

Compensation & Benefits

Annual salary of $60,000 to $70,000, paid monthly and commensurate with experience
Eligibility for quarterly performance-based bonuses of up to $5,000, subject to office policy and performance evaluations

Briefly describe your experience using AI or other technology tools to support research, drafting, organization, or workflow. How do you use those tools responsibly while maintaining accuracy and judgment? 200 words or fewer.
Describe one legislative or policy issue in trade, labor, small business, or another area relevant to this role that you believe Congress should be paying closer attention to. Why does it matter, and what should a congressional office consider when working on it? 250 words or fewer.

Timeline

Applicants selected to advance should expect initial virtual interviews to begin after the application deadline, with in-person interviews in Washington, D.C., to follow shortly thereafter. The interview process may include multiple rounds and may include in-person writing assessments or other evaluations relevant to the position. Timelines are subject to change based on office needs.
