Full Job Description

Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory Summer Internship

This is a multifaceted role for those interested in nature-based nonprofit work. At Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory our mission is to nurture curiosity and create immersive experiences that inspire a deeper connection to space and the natural world. This work involves both learning and teaching. Interns will have the opportunity to design and deliver programming that can be targeted to a broad age range and contribute to the organization’s day-to-day functions.

Our organization includes both the Nature Center, which has exhibits, animal ambassadors, and a botanic garden with native flora, and the Observatory, which houses the largest collection of telescopes available to the pubic and is in one of Oregon’s few designated Dark Sky areas.

Currently, we have an internship focused on the Nature Center. The intern will primarily report to the Wildlife Manager and work with other Nature Center staff as appropriate.

Wildlife Ambassador Care: Our ambassador collection includes raptors, fowl, reptiles and amphibians. Students will learn protocols and assist with proper care of ambassadors. Safe handling and how to utilize ambassadors in education will also be covered. Direct contact with the ambassadors is not guaranteed and will be determined on a case-by-case basis. (40%)

Program Development: Students will be provided with resources, brief training, and an overview of current relevant programs in order to develop their own programs. Program topics may include anything natural history based, with an emphasis on our local environment, and have the option to focus on one of our wildlife ambassadors. Approved programs will be scheduled based on the intern’s availability. (20%)

Daily Operations: Greeting guests and orienting them to the Nature Center, answering questions, and interpreting exhibits. (20%)

Botanic Garden: Students will learn about native plants, how to identify them and how they support our local fauna. Invasive plants and effective removal will also be an area of focus. (20%)

This internship is expected to be approximately 20 hours per week for 10 weeks between June and September. Start date and end date are flexible. This internship comes with a stipend of $2500.
