Full Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Volunteer and Outreach Advocate

REPORTS TO: Sexual Assault and Prevention Program Coordinator

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt/Hourly

HOURS: Part time, with Full-Time potential Monday-Friday with Some Evenings and Weekends

Rate of Pay: $19.00-$24.00

PRIMARY LOCATION: Safe Passage Offices: 850 N. 4th St., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho 83814

POSITION SUMMARY: The Volunteer and Outreach Advocate serves as a liaison between Safe Passage and the north Idaho community by promoting the organization's mission, increasing awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault, and strengthening community partnerships. This position is responsible for coordinating community engagement activities, assisting with youth outreach and prevention initiatives, representing Safe Passage at community events, and overseeing volunteers who support agency programs, events, and fundraising efforts. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys building relationships, engaging with the community, coordinating volunteers, and representing Safe Passage at public events.

This position is part-time (up to 30 hours per week). Individuals interested in additional hours may have the opportunity to increase to full-time through cross-training as a Shelter Advocate and working one 12-hour shelter advocacy shift each week.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (not an exhaustive List):

VOLUNTEER COORDINATION

Collaborates with program directors and staff to identify and assess ongoing volunteer needs across all Safe Passage programs and services.
Recruits, screens, and trains prospective community members to serve as Safe Passage volunteers.
Ensures volunteers complete required applications, background checks, confidentiality agreements, and training requirements before assignment.
Oversees volunteer engagement and placement.
Develops, promotes, and facilitates ongoing and project-based volunteer opportunities.
Maintains volunteer records, schedules, and training documentation.
Provides ongoing support, recognition, and retention efforts for volunteers.
Coordinates volunteer appreciation events and recognition activities.
Assists with recruiting volunteers through community partnerships, presentations, and outreach.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Increases community awareness and understanding of Safe Passage services, domestic violence, sexual assault, and related topics through consistent outreach including social media
messaging and events.
Organizes community events, and coordinates activities during awareness months (e.g., Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month).
Leads tabling efforts at events throughout the five counties Safe Passage serves.
Develops and maintains relationships with schools, businesses, civic groups, faith organizations, and community partners to expand awareness of Safe Passage services.

ADVOCACY

Attend trainings and maintain training hours as set forth by grants.
Adhere to agency policies and work rules including a strict adherence to confidentiality.
Help with community events that Safe Passage is asked to participate in.
Sign up for 1-2 hospital response shifts per month.
Answer hotline calls and assist with walk in clients.
Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

Associate of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, or a related field plus one (1) year of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to stay focused and work effectively in a fast-paced and high-pressure work environment.
Experience with trauma-informed practices for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, including children.
Strong verbal and written communications skills, including public speaking and facilitating meaningful discussions on difficult/sensitive topics.
Ability to develop trusted, professional, and collaborative working relationships with survivors.
Must complete and stay up to date with required Crisis Intervention Training (20 hours).
Must complete and stay up to date with the required Advocacy Training.

A background check is required because our work with vulnerable populations, but criminal history does not preclude employment and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis as it relates to the duties of this role.
Must have a valid driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and access to reliable transportation. This is a community outreach position that requires travel approximately 30% of the time, including regular travel to Sandpoint and other rural areas.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described in this job description are representative of those that must be met by an employee (with or without reasonable accommodation) to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: This job requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Approximately 30% of time will be spent on driving/travel, including travel to rural areas (up to 50 miles outside of Coeur d’Alene). Driving/travel includes offices of healthcare and social service providers, courtrooms, classrooms, and schools, including early hours, evening hours, and weekends as needed. This position occasionally works in high stress environments with children, family, and personnel situations. Requires lifting of up to 25 lbs. is required on an occasional basis.
