Full Job Description

Position Overview

The Industrial Assembly Quality Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the structural integrity, functional performance, and absolute cleanliness of custom and high-volume hydraulic power units (HPUs), lubrication systems, and integrated valve manifolds. Operating within a fast-paced hydraulic engineering solutions and distribution environment, this position is responsible for verifying that all assembled systems conform precisely to engineering designs, customer specifications, and stringent industry standards. The primary focus of this role is the prevention of fluid leaks, the elimination of particulate contamination, component tracking through sub-assemblies to the finished unit, captured testing and validation parameters within the data tracking system, and the validation of functional safety prior to product shipment.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

The daily responsibilities of the Industrial Assembly Quality Technician are structured around rigorous inspection protocols, schematic verification, and collaboration with the assembly team. These duties are detailed in the table below:

Schematic & Drawing Verification:

Perform comprehensive audits of in-process and finished assemblies against hydraulic schematics, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), electrical schematics as applicable, and mechanical engineering drawings. Verify the correct selection, orientation, and installation of pumps, valves, manifolds, accumulators, and sensors.

Dimensional & Mechanical Inspection:

Conduct precise visual and dimensional inspections of structural frames, reservoirs, and piping runs. Utilize calibrated measuring instruments—including calipers, micrometers, and thread gauges—to verify tolerance compliance. Apply and verify exact torque specifications on high-pressure flange connections, manifold bolts, and cartridge valves using calibrated torque wrenches and ensuring completed torqued fasteners and fittings are marked when complete.

Contamination & Cleanliness Control:

Enforce strict fluid cleanliness standards in accordance with ISO 4406 guidelines. Inspect and verify that all hoses, steel tubing, and manifold passages are properly flushed, deburred, and free of particulate matter. Ensure that all open ports, hose ends, and fittings are immediately plugged or capped during assembly to prevent environmental contamination.

Pressure & Functional Testing Support:

Witness and document hydrostatic pressure testing and functional cycle testing of completed hydraulic and lube systems. Monitor systems for external leakage, abnormal pressure drops, or bypass issues. Verify that relief valves, pressure switches, and proportional controls are calibrated to specified operating parameters.

Non-Conformance & Root Cause Analysis:

Identify, document, and segregate non-conforming materials and assemblies. Generate detailed Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and collaborate with production and engineering teams to perform root cause analysis on assembly defects, such as pinched O-rings, cross-threaded fittings, or incorrect hose routing.

Audits & Continuous Improvement:

Conduct periodic audits of assembly workstations, tool calibration logs, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (such as Lean and Six Sigma as applicable) to optimize assembly quality, reduce rework, and streamline inspection workflows.

Training & Mentorship:

Assist in training assembly technicians on quality standards, thread identification (e.g., JIC, ORB, NPT, BSPP, SAE flanges), proper seal installation, and contamination control best practices.

General Operations:

Perform other duties as assigned by the Quality Assurance Manager or operations leadership to support the overall efficiency and quality standards of the facility.

Industry-Specific Quality Expectations:

In the hydraulic engineering and distribution sector, quality is directly tied to system reliability under extreme pressures. The Industrial Assembly Quality Technician is expected to master and uphold the following specialized standards:

Zero-Leakage Mandate: Maintain an uncompromising commitment to leak-free assembly, recognizing that even minor fluid weeping can lead to catastrophic system failure or environmental hazards.
Fluid Cleanliness Mastery: Understand the severe impact of particulate contamination on hydraulic components. The technician must be vigilant in monitoring fluid filtration systems and ensuring that the assembly environment minimizes dust and metal shaving ingress.
Thread & Connection Expertise: Demonstrate flawless identification of diverse thread types and sealing methods, ensuring the correct application of elastomeric seals (O-rings) and avoiding the improper use of thread sealants on high-pressure connections.
Note: The specific program is lower pressure than standard hydraulic systems; less than 200 psi versus standard 1000-10,000 psi systems.

Candidate Requirements and Qualifications:

To successfully perform the duties of this role, candidates must meet the following educational, experiential, and physical criteria:

Education & Certification:

High school diploma or GED required.
Technical certification or Associate Degree in Manufacturing, Quality, Fluid Power, or a related field is highly preferred.
Certification from the International Fluid Power Society (IFPS) (e.g., Certified Fluid Power Connector Specialist or Hydraulic Technician) is a significant asset.

Professional Experience:

1 to 3+ years of experience in manufacturing, mechanical assembly, or quality inspection roles.
Direct experience working with fluid power systems, industrial machinery, or high-pressure piping is highly desirable.

Technical Skills:

Proven ability to read and interpret complex hydraulic schematics (ISO symbols), mechanical blueprints, and electrical wiring diagrams.
Proficiency with precision measurement tools (calipers, torque wrenches, pressure gauges, thread pitch gauges).
Familiarity with quality control methodologies, ISO 9001 standards, and structured documentation.

Soft Skills & Core Competencies:

Exceptional attention to detail and analytical problem-solving skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to constructively address quality issues with assembly technicians and engineers.
Proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Office, ERP/MRP systems, and digital quality logging software).

Physical Demands:

Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods on a concrete manufacturing floor.
Capability to lift and maneuver up to 50 lbs. independently.
Manual dexterity required to perform inspections on intricate mechanical and electrical assemblies.
