Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and certified Clinical Laboratory Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) to join a premier, high-throughput reference laboratory in the Decatur area. This specialized role is within the Newborn Screening Unit, where your work will directly impact early detection, intervention, and life-changing medical outcomes for infants.

In this position, you will perform high-complexity screening tests on newborn dried blood spot specimens to identify genetic and metabolic conditions. This role offers a stable full-time schedule, starting on a temporary contract with a direct path to permanent hire based on performance.

Key Responsibilities

Under general supervision, you will conduct a wide range of laboratory tests defined as high-complexity under CLIA '88 standards.

High-Complexity Testing: Analyze newborn screening dried blood spot specimens for critical genetic and metabolic conditions, including Cystic Fibrosis, Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disorder (SCID), and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
Advanced Instrumentation: Utilize cutting-edge laboratory techniques and instrumentation, including tandem mass spectrometry (MSMS), high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), real-time PCR, fluorescent immunoassays, and enzyme assays.
Data Interpretation & Reporting: Carefully interpret, record, and verify complex testing results, repeating assays when necessary to ensure maximum precision and consistency before reporting findings.
Quality Control: Maintain exact compliance with state and federal laboratory licensure laws by documenting all QA/QC protocols in accordance with established laboratory manuals.
Equipment Care: Perform and document routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on delicate analytical instruments.
Special Projects: Assist with assay validations and method evaluations for newly added disorders or second-tier screening protocols.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
Certification: Current certification as a Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist—MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), AMT, or equivalent—or training/experience that meets standard personnel qualification requirements for high-complexity testing technologists.

Preferred Skills & Competencies:

Strong background or familiarity with MSMS, HPLC, or molecular assay (PCR) diagnostic workflows.
High attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and a commitment to data integrity.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative, mission-driven team.
