Position Overview
The Senior Embedded Android Platform Engineer will help design, develop, maintain, and evolve the software platform that powers Sensera’s camera products. You will work across the boundary between hardware and software, diagnosing issues that may involve Android applications, framework components, native services, Linux kernel drivers, device trees, board-support packages, camera modules, cellular modems, networking, USB devices, power management, or custom PCB behavior. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable investigating an Android application problem, modifying an AOSP build, reading kernel logs, debugging camera initialization, analyzing video pipelines, and collaborating with electrical engineers or hardware vendors.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and evolve the embedded Android platform used across Sensera camera products.
- Build, configure, customize, and maintain Android Open Source Project distributions for custom hardware.
- Integrate and maintain vendor-provided board-support packages, kernel trees, device configurations, binary components, and hardware abstraction layers.
- Support the bring-up and migration of Android software across new motherboard and processor generations.
- Develop high-quality Android applications and system components using Java, Kotlin, C, and C++ as appropriate.
- Create and maintain Android services, native daemons, system applications, boot-time processes, and hardware-integration components.
- Customize Android framework behavior, permissions, startup sequencing, networking, power management, device policy, and system configuration for a dedicated embedded appliance.
- Integrate and support MIPI CSI-2 and USB camera modules.
- Develop and maintain image and video acquisition, capture, encoding, processing, storage, and streaming pipelines.
- Work with Android camera frameworks, camera HAL components, V4L2 interfaces, media codecs, and vendor-specific camera software.
- Develop image- and video-processing capabilities using technologies such as OpenCV and FFmpeg.
- Diagnose image-quality, frame-rate, synchronization, buffering, latency, encoding, dropped-frame, and camera-initialization issues.
- Investigate failures involving cellular modems, Wi-Fi, GNSS/GPS, Bluetooth, USB, Ethernet, cameras, storage, and other attached peripherals.
- Diagnose difficult system-level problems using logcat, kernel logs, tombstones, ANR reports, crash dumps, traces, and hardware diagnostics.
- Work with board-design partners, processor vendors, camera-module suppliers, modem vendors, and internal hardware engineers to resolve platform and integration issues.
- Improve system reliability, boot behavior, recovery mechanisms, watchdog handling, remote diagnostics, and unattended operation.
- Develop and maintain build, flashing, provisioning, update, and manufacturing-support tools.
- Support secure boot, application signing, Android Verified Boot, OTA updates, device identity, credential management, and related platform-security concerns.
- Profile and optimize CPU, GPU, memory, storage, network, thermal, power, and video processing performance.
- Establish engineering practices for testing, release management, source control, documentation, and long-term maintenance of the embedded Android platform.
Required Qualifications
- Significant professional software-engineering experience, including substantial experience with embedded Android or Android platform development.
- Strong experience building and modifying AOSP for custom or specialized hardware.
- Experience working with Android board-support packages, Linux kernels, device trees, hardware abstraction layers, native services, and system configuration.
- Strong Android application-development skills using Java and/or Kotlin.
- Proficiency with C and C++ in Linux or Android environments.
- Strong understanding of Android architecture, including the framework, Binder IPC, system services, init, SELinux, JNI, native daemons, application lifecycle, permissions, and process management.
- Experience integrating and supporting camera modules on embedded systems.
- Experience with MIPI CSI-2, USB cameras, or both.
- Experience with image and video acquisition, processing, encoding, storage, or streaming.
- Practical experience with OpenCV, FFmpeg, or comparable image and video frameworks.
- Familiarity with Android camera architecture, Camera HAL implementations, V4L2, media codecs, and hardware-accelerated video pipelines.
- Experience diagnosing low-level Android and Linux problems using tools such as ADB, logcat, dmesg, GDB, LLDB, strace, perf, systrace, tombstones, and crash dumps.
- Working knowledge of cellular modems and mobile-data connectivity.
- Working knowledge of Wi-Fi, GNSS/GPS, Bluetooth, USB, and IP networking.
- Experience developing software for custom PCBs, system-on-modules, or other purpose-built embedded devices.
- Ability to read hardware documentation, data sheets, interface specifications, and boardsupport documentation.
- Experience with embedded-device boot processes, flashing, provisioning, recovery, and software updates.
- Strong debugging instincts and the ability to methodically isolate failures across application, operating-system, driver, firmware, camera, and hardware layers.
- Ability to work effectively with external hardware vendors, chipset providers, cameramodule suppliers, and engineering partners.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience bringing up new embedded Android hardware platforms.
- Experience migrating an Android product between processor or motherboard generations.
- Experience working with proprietary BSPs, vendor kernels, binary drivers, and hardware-specific Android components.
- Deep experience with Android Camera2, Camera HAL, V4L2, media controller APIs, or vendor camera frameworks.
- Experience with MIPI CSI-2 sensors, serializers and deserializers, camera timing, sensor configuration, and image-signal-processing pipelines.
- Experience with USB Video Class devices and custom USB camera interfaces.
- Experience with H.264, H.265, MJPEG, RTP, RTSP, WebRTC, or other video encoding and transport technologies.
- Experience optimizing FFmpeg or OpenCV workloads on resource-constrained embedded hardware.
- Familiarity with GPU, DSP, NPU, or other hardware-accelerated image-processing environments.
- Experience with camera calibration, color processing, exposure control, focus control, image-quality tuning, or low-light imaging.
- Experience with USB host-mode devices, USB power control, Ethernet adapters, serial devices, and dynamically attached peripherals.
- Experience with power-managed or intermittently powered hardware components. â—Ź Familiarity with Yocto, Buildroot, conventional embedded Linux, or Linux driver development.
- Experience with secure boot, Android Verified Boot, signed firmware, encrypted storage, OTA systems, and production-device security.
- Experience supporting remotely deployed, unattended, or intermittently connected devices.
- Experience building diagnostics and observability for large fleets of embedded devices.
- Experience with manufacturing test systems, factory provisioning, and production-line diagnostics.
What Success Looks Like
During the first year, the successful candidate will:
- Develop a thorough understanding of Sensera’s existing Android hardware and software platform.
- Become familiar with the embedded Android stack.
- Improve the reliability, maintainability, and observability of the current platform.
- Play a central role in bringing up the next generation of Sensera camera hardware.
- Establish a repeatable process for AOSP builds, BSP integration, releases, updates, debugging, and vendor coordination.
- Improve the reliability and performance of camera acquisition, processing, encoding, and streaming pipelines.
- Reduce the time required to diagnose and resolve complex field failures.
- Help Sensera make sound architectural decisions about future embedded camera products.

This position will work closely with software engineers, electrical engineers, cloud engineers, product leaders, manufacturing partners, and external board-design and hardware specialists.
Ideal Candidate
You may be a strong fit for this role if you enjoy solving problems that do not fit neatly into a single software layer. You understand that an Android application failure may actually originate in a kernel driver, a USB power sequence, a modem state transition, a camera sensor configuration, a MIPI interface, a vendor binary, a device-tree setting, a video buffer, a race during boot, or an electrical characteristic of the board. You are comfortable taking ownership of ambiguous and technically difficult problems, developing evidence-based root-cause analyses, and carrying solutions through development, validation, deployment, and long-term production support.
