Finance Manager (Part-Time)

Who We Are

As seen in The Washington Post, Grassroots Comedy (GC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is passionate about two things: comedy and making the world a better place. We do this by producing regular (mostly monthly, but sometimes bi-weekly) cause-tailored comedy shows to engage audiences with progressive, mission-driven organizations, as well as workshops that train people how to create and scale comedy for real social impact. Our mission is to make humans laugh while improving humanity.

Who You Are

GC seeks Finance Coordinator to ensure we maintain accurate financial records and a clear understanding of our assets, liabilities, expenses, and revenue. The person in this role will help strengthen our financial systems, policies, and reporting processes while supporting the overall financial health of the organization.

The ideal candidate is a finance, bookkeeping, or accounting professional looking for a long-term part-time role with flexibility and meaningful impact. We are looking for someone excited about the opportunity to integrate into a quickly growing organization and play a major role in its financial health and sustainability.

We envision this role focusing heavily on bookkeeping during the first several months (approximately a 70/30 bookkeeping-to-accounting split), then gradually transitioning toward broader accounting and financial responsibilities over time (closer to a 50/50 split).

Job Summary

This position reports to the Executive Director and will support most of Grassroots Comedy’s day-to-day financial operations. Responsibilities include general ledger maintenance, month-end close activities, financial reporting, account reconciliations, budgeting support, grant-related financial tracking, and other accounting projects such as annual tax filing support as needed.

In addition, this role will oversee operational finance tasks such as invoicing, payment processing, expense tracking, and contractor/vendor payments. This is currently a fully remote role and is expected to continue indefinitely.

Responsibilities

Conduct reconciliations of all financial accounts on a weekly and monthly basis, as appropriate
Maintain and balance the general ledger in an accurate, complete, and up-to-date manner
Record and verify financial transactions in a timely manner to ensure GC’s books remain accurate and up to date
Manage accounts payable, including reviewing, coding, recording, and processing payments
Manage accounts receivable, including invoicing, deposits, and collections
Process, track, and record invoices and payments for performers, venues, contractors, partners, and other expenses
Prepare monthly financial reports and perform financial analysis as needed
Interpret and apply accounting policies, rules, and regulations to ensure compliance with applicable standards
Update and maintain GC’s annual budget
Prepare Profit & Loss statements and other financial reports
Support budgeting, reporting, and compliance related to grants and restricted funding
Identify opportunities to improve financial systems and workflows
Track grant allocations and ensure that funds are assigned to proper line items

Requirements and Qualifications

2-4 years of relevant experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or finance
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred but not required; equivalent professional experience will also be considered
Strong understanding of accounting principles and GAAP
Proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel (or equivalent spreadsheet tools)
Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger management
Strong verbal and written communication skills
High degree of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and manage deadlines with limited oversight
Experience with nonprofit accounting and/or grant management is a strong plus
CPA or bookkeeping certification is a major plus
Candidates living in the Washington, DC area are preferred

Compensation

Starting at $25/hour for up to 20 hours per month, with opportunity for compensation growth as organizational revenue and funding increase.

We recognize that this starting rate may be below market for some candidates given the scope of the role, and are especially interested in candidates excited to grow with a mission-driven organization during a pivotal stage.

Monthly hours may vary depending on organizational needs.
