Job Description
Teacher
General Functions:
Under the direction of the Program Director or Executive in charge, the Teacher, in harmony with the Christian nature and Mission of the YMCA, as well as the established goals and objectives of the YMCA, shall be responsible for the safety and well being of children under their specific care relating to the Association. In general, the role of the Teacher is to build relationships with and between staff members, volunteers, members, program participants and the communities the YMCA serves.
Specifically, the Teacher will direct the activities and maintain the environment of a designated classroom area. This includes lesson planning and implementing the daily learning activities of a designed group of children, indirect supervision of teacher assistants and students assigned to the area, evaluating children’s progress and maintaining on-going communication with parents and ensuring a safe, attractive learning environment for children in the program.
Physical/Mental/Environmental Requirements:
Position requires employees to observe/evaluate groups of children/staff by sight, sound, and active interaction. Must be able to easily move through all areas of the childcare rooms and communicate effectively verbally and in written form with children/adults. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; to sit on floor without back support and return to a standing position; to walk 2 -3 miles per day; to reach, bend, crawl, twist, balance, all in the process of carrying out activities and providing custodial care of young children throughout shift. Must be able to push or pull a cart, stroller or wagon, weighing up to 100 pounds. Must have the physical stamina to spend 8 hours providing activities and care of young children. Must be able to maintain concentration, focusing on multiple tasks simultaneously. Must be able to manage time effectively and meet deadlines. Must have visual acuity to do minimal amount of paperwork and closely supervise groups of children.
Skills and Qualifications: The Teacher, in general, requires excellent communication skills, excellent relationship building skills, the ability to model the YMCA Core Values and have the ability and desire to make a personal connection with the communities the YMCA serves.
Specifically, the Teacher requires meeting the qualifications for Teacher under DCF 251 Licensing Rules for Group Day Care Centers and the following:
- Thorough knowledge of age developmental patterns, needs, and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, along with the ability to effectively implement and share knowledge with staff.
- Working knowledge of DCF 251 Licensing Rules for Wisconsin.
- Certification in community First Aid and CPR or the ability to attain within 30 days of hire.
- New Staff Orientation and Blood-borne Pathogens training within 30 days of hire. Adhere to OSHA standard and guidelines.
- Participate in 15 hours (full time staff) or (15 hours part time staff) of continuing education per year to maintain licensing certification.( Does not apply to relief staff positions )
Essential Functions:
- Plan, conduct and evaluate daily program of developmentally appropriate activities and learning experiences for children including self-esteem and positive self image, social interaction, self expression, communication skills, creative expression, large and small muscle development and intellectual growth.
- Work with Assistant Teacher to formulate weekly written curriculum plan. Prepare monthly theme calendar with team teachers and assistants. Supervise and participate in daily activities of the classroom.
- Provide frequent, positive ad warm interaction with children. Utilize positive discipline techniques which promote self-esteem and personal growth for children.
- Maintain orderly physical environment; safe, neat, inviting and developmentally appropriate. Implement YMCA policies regarding safety, health and security.
- Implement YMCA policies regarding safety, health and security in assigned area. Monitor health of children daily, reporting conditions which require attention. Comply with WI codes for reporting child abuse. Administer and record medication and treatment according to YMCA policy and WI codes.
- Maintain effective parent relations by daily communications and ongoing documentation about child’s development and adjustment in the program. Provide opportunities for periodic formal conferences, at least semi-annually. Seek parental feedback with formal parent surveys annually.
- Provide ongoing orientation and on-site supervision of all personnel/students assigned to designated area, offering appropriate suggestions, and maintaining an atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation. Delegate job duties to teacher assistants or student teachers as appropriate. Assist with management of staff time, staff/child ratios and daily classroom schedule in assigned area.
- Actively participate in weekly group and monthly meetings and in-services. Contribute knowledge and participate in discussions during meetings and in-services. Participate in center activities and special events.
- Annually complete 15 hours (full time) or 15 hours (part time staff) hours of training in early childhood education as approved by the Director or Coordinator and meet requirements for continuing education and in-service stipulated by state licensing. Maintain updated entries to the Registry of Wisconsin.
