Job description:
ICAN is seeking compassionate, dependable, and motivated Coaches to provide individualized (1:1) support to adults with developmental and physical disabilities through our Supported Employment and Tailored Day Services programs.
As a Coach, you will work directly with clients at their workplaces and throughout the community, providing personalized coaching that promotes independence, confidence, and skill development. Depending on each client’s goals, coaching may focus on maintaining employment, developing workplace skills, increasing independence, building daily living skills, participating in community activities, pursuing volunteer opportunities, or exploring post-secondary education.
Every client receives individualized support based on their unique strengths and goals. Our Coaches help clients develop the skills necessary to become as independent as possible while encouraging self-advocacy, personal choice, and meaningful community participation.
This is an entry-level position that is ideal for individuals who are patient, flexible, reliable, and passionate about making a positive impact.
Schedule:
This position offers flexible scheduling based on client needs.
Applicants should be available to:
- Work 25 or more hours per week
- Work weekdays and weekends as needed
- Travel throughout Long Beach and surrounding communities
- Travel throughout South Bay and surrounding communities
- Maintain a consistent and reliable schedule

Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be eligible to work legally in the United States
- Must be able to consistently arrive on time and maintain regular attendance
- Must be able to multitask and work independently with clients
- Must be able to meet schedules and deadlines
- Must be an organized, flexible, detail-oriented, and dependable individual
- Must follow all the rules and regulations listed in ICAN’s Policy and Procedures Manual and ICAN’s Code of Conduct and Ethics
- Must be comfortable working with and directly caring for people with developmental disabilities, whether in a controlled environment or in the community
Education, Experience, and Knowledge:
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities is preferred but not required
- Must have adequate typing skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational and time management abilities
- Previous experience utilizing an iPad is preferred but not required
- Must be fluent in English and have basic English writing and grammar skills
- Bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or ASL is a plus
Licenses and Other Requirements:
- Must have the ability to pass a tuberculosis skin test
- Submit to a fingerprint clearance through LiveScan before starting employment
- Must be CPR and First Aid certified or be willing to complete CPR and First Aid certification
- Must be CPI certified or willing to complete prevention-first training at hire
- Must have reliable transportation. If taking public transportation, must have the ability to travel to job sites and hiring locations in the South Bay, West Los Angeles, and/or greater Long Beach areas. If using a private vehicle, valid California Driver’s License or valid driver’s license from another state at the time of interview and throughout employment with a clean three-year driving record. Willingness to submit to a DMV background check and provide evidence of current auto registration and liability insurance.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 70 pounds, including pushing a wheelchair
- Working in indoor and outdoor environments, as well as traveling
Professional Development:
- The Coach must attend scheduled monthly training for approximately two (2) hours as professional development outside of regular coaching shift hours.
- Team meetings may be facilitated in person, via video conference, or via on-demand videos.

Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized one-on-one coaching to adults with developmental and physical disabilities in employment and community settings.
- Support clients in achieving greater independence by developing employment skills, daily living skills, community integration, social skills, volunteer opportunities, and/or post-secondary education goals based on each client’s Individual Program Plan (IPP).
- Review client profiles and support plans before each shift to ensure coaching services align with each client’s goals, preferences, and support needs.
- Plan, Coordinate, and facilitate individualized coaching sessions and learning opportunities that promote employment skills, daily living skills, community integration, social skills, volunteer participation, post-secondary education, and greater independence, based on each client's Individualized Program Plan (IPP).
- Coach clients by demonstrating, observing, and reinforcing workplace expectations, communication skills, social skills, problem-solving, safety practices, daily living skills, and job-specific tasks.
- Encourage client self-advocacy, identify natural supports, and utilize fading techniques to maximize client independence in employment and community settings.
- Assist clients in navigating workplace expectations, community participation, interpersonal relationships, and conflict resolution while promoting appropriate professional behavior.
- Maintain visual supervision of clients during in-person coaching, unless on an approved break or providing authorized remote coaching services.
- Foster positive, respectful, and professional relationships with clients, employers, family members, guardians, coworkers, and community partners, while advocating for person-centered services that support client goals and well-being.
- Confirm scheduled shifts with clients at least 24 hours in advance and communicate scheduling changes to the appropriate supervisor or scheduler.
- Provide travel and destination training when appropriate to increase client independence within the community.
- Maintain accurate schedules, document coaching appointments, locations, and required information using ICAN’s scheduling systems.
- Accurately clock in and out for all shifts and meal breaks, and promptly report any timekeeping issues.
- Complete detailed, accurate, and timely case notes, progress documentation, and all required documentation in ICAN’s electronic records system, and communicate relevant client updates to supervisors or case managers.
- Immediately report client incidents, injuries, behavioral concerns, suspected abuse, safety concerns, or other significant events to the appropriate supervisor or case manager in accordance with ICAN policies.
- Use company-issued equipment, technology, and confidential information responsibly and in accordance with ICAN policies.
- Maintain professional communication, dependable attendance, and cooperative working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, clients, families, employers, and community partners.
- Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of ICAN’s mission and operations.
