Aberdeen is a city in Grays Harbor County, Washington, United States. Aberdeen was founded by early settler Samuel Benn when he had a plat filed in 1884. The population was 16,461 at the 2000 census. The city is the economic center of Grays Harbor County, bordering the cities of Hoquiam and Cosmopolis. Aberdeen is sometimes called the "Gateway to the Olympic Peninsula," though it is more widely known as the "Birthplace of Grunge," due to being the hometown of the founding members of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. Aberdeen is in the book The Absolutley Worst Places to Live in America, saying that with the possible exception of Flint, Michigan no other city conjures of utter dismay as does Aberdeen. Aberdeen has the the highest crime rate in the state of Washington and is the prime methamphetamine producer in the Pacific Northwest.
