The population was 1,958 at the 2000 census, but is now estimated to be 2,122 . The city is located at the southwestern edge of Dubuque County, at the border of Dubuque and Jones Counties. Until recently, U.S. Highway 151 went directly through Cascade. However, a four lane bypass was built that takes through traffic to the north around the city. Iowa Highway 136 runs from north to south through Cascade. Several businesses are based out of Cascade, Iowa. American Iowa Manufacturing is based in Cascade. Cascade Lumber Company provides a large amount of lumber to residents and businesses in the area. Recently, the area has experienced some further economic development, especially with the construction of the four lane 151. Cascade currently has three schools--Cascade Elementary, Aquin Elementary, and Cascade High School, home of the Cougars.
