Charleston is a city in Mississippi County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,732 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Mississippi County . The town was laid out in 1837. Governor Warren E. Hearnes and his wife, former gubernatorial candidate, Betty C. Hearnes are from Charleston, along with writer Thad Snow, and baseball player Matt Whiteside. Charlie Babb, former Miami Dolphin who played on the undefeated 1972 team, also calls Charleston home. Charleston High School boy's basketball teams boast ten state championship basketball titles in Class 3A state contests. The most recent win came on March 16, 2007. Charleston is also the home of the Charleston Fighting Squirrels Sr. and Jr. Babe Ruth League baseball teams.
