It was named for DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor who built the Erie Canal; he previously was also a U.S. Senator from New York. It has no connection whatsoever to Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States and an Arkansas governor before that, or to his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton, who also became a U.S. Senator from New York.
