Following a successful incorporation referendum in May 2004, the city became Utah's newest municipality on January 14, 2005. Cottonwood Heights had been a Census-designated place before incorporation. In the 2000 census, the CDP population was 27,569, a slight decrease from the 1990 figure of 28,766. Cottonwood Heights has become well-known in recent years as the location of the headquarters of Overstock.com. Corporate offices of Jetblue Airways and Extra Space Storage are also located in the city.
