Crandon, Wisconsin

Crandon is a city in Forest County, Wisconsin, United States; it is in the northeastern part of the state, about 100 miles north of Green Bay. The population was 1,961 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Forest County and is the only incorporated town in the county. The city is located adjacent to the Town of Crandon. Forest County and the town of Crandon were started in 1887 and named after Frank P. Crandon, the tax commissioner of the Chicago and North Western Railway. Since then logging, tourism and light industry have been the staple of the economy. Crandon is well known for its outdoor recreation opportunities including fishing, hunting and snowmobiling with many lakes and hundreds of miles of trails. Crandon is also home of The Crandon International Off-Road Raceway.
