Dorchester, Massachusetts

Dorchester, including a large portion of today's Boston, was incorporated in 1630. It was still primarily rural and had a population of 12,000 when annexed to Boston in 1870. Railroad and streetcar lines brought rapid growth, increasing the population to 150,000 by 1920. It is named after the town of Dorchester in the English county of Dorset, from which Puritans emigrated. It is now a large, diverse working class community with many African-Americans and East and Southeast Asians, and is still a center of Irish-American immigration. Polish immigrants are also a vibrant population of Dorchester with their own Catholic Parish, Saturday language school and parochial school. The Andrew Square area is also home to Polish restaurants, delis and clubs.
