Eatonton's claims to fame are its status as "Dairy Capital of Georgia" , being the birthplace of Alice Walker , Joel Chandler Harris , Henry Grady Weaver and S. Truett Cathy and, until recently, being home to the Egyptian-styled Nuwaubian compound known as Tama-Re. A magnificent Native American Rock Eagle stone mound is located at Georgia 4-H's Camp Rock Eagle. Eatonton is named after William Eaton, an officer and diplomat involved in the First Barbary War. The name consists of his surname with the English suffix "ton", meaning "town".
