Granite City is a city in Madison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,301 at the 2000 census. Roughly 67,000 people live in the immediate Granite City area. Granite City is part of the Greater St. Louis Area and was named by the Niedringhaus brothers who operated a Graniteware plant in the city. Granite City is often simply called "Granite."
